To my darling Richard, happy 70th birthday & congratulations on your retirement. Your irreverence makes me howl, your capacity for martinis and cosmos makes me ill, and your friendship makes my heart sing one of your fav Bobby Darin evergreens. Today my grandma would’ve been 100 years old. If you still have a grandparent, call, text, visit - cherish them with all your energy. My parents worked full-time and my grandma picked me up from school every day until I was 12. I’d lie in her lap and she would read Diane Steel or John Grisham while I read The Hardy Boys, Artemis Fowl, or the back of a shampoo bottle. A rippling Fabio on the covers of her romance novels may have been my awakening. When I was very young, I have vivid memories of watching The Price is Right and The Young and the Restless with her, entranced by the technicolor and soapy drama. She was my fiercest protector, greatest encourager, and closest ally. She was in her 40s when she adopted my mother. My mother was in the orphanage for 6 months already and my grandma requested a baby that no one else wanted. (There was bias against Italians in the early 1960s and my mother is olive-skinned.) My brothers and I wouldn’t exist if my grandmother didn’t make that lionhearted decision to adopt a baby in need. Gram, I am thinking of you extra on your centennial, though I sense your spirit in my heart every day. We were each other’s person and always will be. Thank you for watching over me. Now, from beyond this earthly realm, use your mystic powers to help get my books published!!!! Your influence inhabits every page. And I’ll stop asking for stuff after that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 by @phillipjpuzzo
