Allow me to reintroduce Yaashani Tota—aka “i2land pearl,” aka “the deuce”—now officially a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Delta Iota Chapter 💗💚

Watching her (@nyokiyaashani ) journey unfold has been powerful. From the confidence and determination she carried at Paul Robeson High School to the purpose, strength, and excellence she walks in today, she’s grown into exactly who she was meant to be—and it’s been an honor to witness.

Moments like this remind me why the work mattered. Back then, we poured everything into helping our students see possibilities beyond what was in front of them. They didn’t always know how far they could go—but they’re showing us now. They’re not just dreaming anymore, they’re living it. And that is the real impact. That is legacy.

There’s a depth of pride I can’t quite put into words. This is only the beginning for her, and I already know she’s about to elevate to even greater heights.

My former student became my daughter, and this week became my Soror in Blu!!! 💙⚪️🕊️

Allow me to RE-INTRODUCE Danielle “PoiZed PawZ #5” Edwards, now officially a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Chi Chapter. 💙⚪️🕊️

Watching her evolution has been nothing short of a blessing. From the energy and drive she brought from Paul Robeson HS to her continued journey, to the grace, strength, and excellence she carries, I’ve watched a young woman grow into her purpose right before my eyes. I’ve had the true honor of witnessing her mature into greatness.

I can’t believe the impact we created at my high school as principal—that now our kids are experiencing college in ways they once couldn’t even imagine. They didn’t always realize the life they could have, and now they are truly making that life happen for themselves. It fills me with so much pride to witness, because this is what impact looks like. This is legacy in the making.

And now, to call her my Soror—I’m proud in a way words can’t fully capture. She’s stepped into a whole new chapter, and I know she’s going to soar even higher. 💙🤍🕊️

This is my 7th child entering Greek life… and it never gets old. More to come!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

As #BlackHistoryMonth comes to a close, I’m beyond grateful for everyone who continues to celebrate me not only as someone walking in Black History, but also as someone working in it, and representing it every single day. ✊🏾🏴

As a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. @pbs_1914 @phillynusigma_1922 , I carry our motto — “Culture for Service and Service to Humanity” — not just Black History Month, but every month. That commitment was on full display at Frankford High School’s Annual Black History Month Celebration themed “Meet The Greeks.”

It was powerful sharing our personal journeys, the rich legacy of Phi Beta Sigma, and the significance of the Divine Nine with such bright, engaged students. Major shoutout to my Lincoln alum bro and fellow Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Ariel Lajara @helrel4dawg , proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated @officialoppf , @betaques1914 , for sharing his incredibly powerful story and inspiring the next generation of leaders and changemakers. From modest beginnings to positions of impact, we reminded students that their dreams are valid, their voices matter, and their excellence is non-negotiable.

Thank you to Dr. Michael Calderone @dr_calderone and the entire Frankford team @frankfordhs for creating space for this dialogue and inspiration. If Frankford High School is any indication, our future is in good hands.

We’ve always been the blueprint. We’ve always been essential. We’ve always been the standard. Our story didn’t start in chains, and it doesn’t end in footnotes. We are not an addendum to history — we are authors of its past, its present, and its future. We are not separate from the story. WE ARE the story. We are the world’s history. We are AMERICA’S history. And we will continue to shape what comes next. 💫

Do you think it’s a coincidence this happened across the street from the school I served for a decade??? And with a Mayor who was a college classmate??? You know I’m a part of this!!!

Proud to have been part of the community advocacy group that helped bring this transformative initiative across the finish line! With Mayor Cherelle Parker making public safety a top priority, Philadelphia is set to build a state-of-the-art forensic lab—equipping our police with the tools they need to solve crimes faster and keep our communities safe.

Jobs! K-12 Student Internships! S.T.E.M. research in University City/West Philly!!! This is a game-changer. And once again I am a part of Philadelphia history.

📍3 days in LA 📚✈️
Came for the Urban Superintendents Academy training program, stayed for the sunshine. ☀️✌🏽🎓
Never thought I’d be studying at the University of Southern California (USC @uscedu )and definitely never imagined adding a Superintendent credential to the mix. 😳

Let’s be real: I only ever wanted to be a teacher.
I never applied for any of my jobs — people just kept picking me. Saw something I didn’t see in myself. (They must be INSANE!!! Like… y’all good?? 😂)

Despite the national recognition, the more than 50+ awards and accolades, it’s just a journey of “Reluctant Leadership”:
• Assistant Principal (‘04–‘11)
• Principal (‘11–‘23)
• Assistant Superintendent (‘23–??)
• Superintendent (WTF?! 😬)

Proud member of The 11th Hour – Cohort XI of the AASA Urban Superintendents Academy at USC…….”Rising to lead in today’s world, when it matters most. ⏳🔥”

If this journey keeps going… someone very brave picked me. Again. 🫣

Legacy. Impact. Purpose.

If I ever questioned my purpose as an educator, God answered LOUD and CLEAR.

To see my former students Zaire “Shift” MacLaine (@shiftwtff) and Donte Williams standing tall as the face of Cheyney University (@cheyneyuniv @cheyneystrong ) on Fox 29 News (@fox29philly ): Good Day Philadelphia—after everything life tried to throw their way—that’s legacy. That’s grace. That’s GOD.

As I drive through Philly and see the faces of my former students shining on billboards, thriving on campuses, and taking over stages—I’m overwhelmed with pride. These are not just success stories. They are my testaments. They are the living proof that the work we do in schools MATTERS.

From Lincoln to Cheyney, to Harvard University and all points in between, I thank every student who ever gave me the honor of showing up for you. You have shaped my legacy more than I could ever show in return—and for that, I am truly humbled and forever grateful.

To all my students—past and present—no matter where you are in the world: I see you. I believe in you. I love you.
You are my motivation. You are my why. My legacy is rooted in college doors opened, dreams realized, and a generation of young leaders rising—from the classrooms of Philly to campuses across the country, transforming lives, empowering minds, and building unstoppable futures.

Still in awe of the spaces and places I find myself these days.

This weekend, I had the true honor of attending the 99th Annual Spring Formal Black Tie Gala for the Ye Olde Philadelphia Club — a historic and venerable institution of African American men dedicated to leadership, fellowship, and uplifting our community. Special Shoutout and many thanks to Mr. Hue Douglas for the exclusive invitation.

It was a beautiful evening filled with legacy, excellence, and unity. I was especially proud to stand alongside my Blue & White Family of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., including my lovely Sister/Soror Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson, her husband and my Nu Sigma Chapter President David Richardson. Also proud to have shared the night with Councilmember Anthony Phillips, PA State Representative Amen Brown, Commonwealth Association of School Administrators (CASA) President Dr. Robin Cooper, outstanding Principal Dr. Toni Damon, and so many others who continue to represent and elevate the spirit of our city.

The Ye Olde Philadelphia Club has cultivated a legacy of empowerment and mutual support for nearly a century — and it’s deeply inspiring to witness and be a part of that ongoing tradition. I can’t wait to join them for there Centennial celebration in 2026!!!!
