Every season, we highlight 10 shows from the Philly Bluegrass Calendar and send it out to our 1,300 email subscribers. It’s never an easy list to make, because there are always more than 10 standout shows in a given season. So we look for the ones that you might kick yourself for missing: the legend on your bluegrass bucket list, the band on its way up, and the artists stretching the music in new directions. Take, for example, @magootheband, a fast-rising band on the jamgrass scene. The Denver four-piece has racked up accolades, including a win at UllrGrass, second at Telluride, and a dobro contest win for Dylan Flynn at RockyGrass, where guitarist Erik Hill was runner-up in the flatpicking contest. Earlier this year, they celebrated their debut album, What a Life, with sold-out shows in Denver and Chicago. On October 15th they’ll celebrate their Philadelphia-area debut at @118northwayne. Magoo is one of 10 shows in our Fall 2026 Calendar Highlights. Find the full list, plus every show and jam in the region, at phillybluegrass.com. (Link in profile.) Hmmm, 2pm playoff baseball. Not ideal for those of us with day jobs. On the bright side, at least it doesn’t conflict with the jam? And apropos, you can catch Baltimore’s @thehighandwides Sunday at @cornerhouseconcerts in Chestnut Hill. 🪕⚾ Full details at phillybluegrass.com/calendar Wed 9/30 Doylestown Bluegrass Jam at Hilltown German Club Thu 10/1 Holmesburg Bluegrass Jam at The MacSwiney Club (Jenkintown, PA) Sat 10/3 Tookany Creek at Tacony Creek Park Music & Arts Festival (Philadelphia) Mill Creek and Huston West at Harvest Fest at Cartesian Brewing (Philadelphia) Sun 10/4 First Sunday Bluegrass Jam at Steel City Coffeehouse (Phoenixville) The High & Wides at Corner House Concerts (Chestnut Hill) #phillybluegrass #bluegrass #phillymusic #phillies by @phillybluegrass

Festival season may be over, but fall in Philadelphia rarely lets up. Between September and Thanksgiving, our area will be visited by multiple International Bluegrass Music Association (@intlbluegrass) award winners, two fiddle summits, and a wave of younger bands rewriting the rules of bluegrass music. Take, for example, @mountain_grass_unit. In just a handful of years, the Birmingham natives have jumped from playing fairs and pizza joints to headlining major rooms. Last year @billystrings name-checked them as a band to watch in his keynote address at the IBMA conference, where Mountain Grass Unit also won the Momentum Award for Band of the Year. The band visits Philly on November 11 fresh off dropping their latest album, Appalachian Smoke. These days they are counting their streams by the millions, so catch them up close at @bbowlphilly before you’re watching them from the nosebleeds at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Mountain Grass Unit is one of ten shows in our fall Calendar Highlights.
