Celebrating 32 Years of Sobriety Today.My longest, most intentional relationship and the one that saved my life.I wasn’t an everyday drinker, and I rarely drank at home. I was a bar drinker. A weekend binge drinker. A happy-hour-to-last-call drinker. I never lost a job because of it, but I was often late, always exhausted, and my life was becoming unmanageable. My bar tab mattered more than my bills.I tried quitting a few times in 1990, thinking awareness alone would fix it. It didn’t. The photo here is from August 1991—taken just weeks before I tried to end my life.Alcohol didn’t make me fun; it magnified my anxiety, deepened my depression, and numbed me just enough to make bad decisions feel normal. I couldn’t imagine life being enjoyable sober, but drinking wasn’t inspiring or motivating either. It was slowly killing me.On December 16, 1991, I finally got sober with the help of AA and the people there who felt exactly like I did. (22nd & Spruce Monday Beginners Meeting, 7:30pm—still going strong. Nearby meetings: aasepia.org)That first year sober was magical. I was present. Clear. Grateful.The next two years were hard work, but good work. Life still hands you stress and disappointment, but it’s so much easier to face it sober, with tools, with community, with clarity. When you drink, the problems don’t go away—they wait for you, usually bigger.Getting sober is the greatest achievement of my life. I share this every year because someone planted the seed for me back in 1990, and it saved me in 1991. Maybe this plants a seed for someone else.I live a healthier, fuller, more connected life today and I’m grateful for every single day of it.One day at a time.#onedayatatime by @phillychitchat

Thousands of runners and walkers took over the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the 12th Annual Philly Midnight Run @phillymidnightrun , turning the @cityofphiladelphia into one big late-night celebration of fitness and community. Participants were cheered on by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker @phillymayor as they made their way through the course, adding to the excitement of the evening. Happy Birthday to me! 🎂 63 today. Grateful ❤️Birthdays are our own personal milestones. Unlike New Year’s, which we all celebrate together, birthdays make us stop and reflect. Where have we been? What have we accomplished? What do we still want to do?The truth is, I never really planned for 63 because there was a time when I didn’t think I’d live past 30.Drugs and alcohol had made my life unmanageable. I wasn’t an everyday drinker, but when I drank, it consumed my life. I’d experienced homelessness, I was broke, and I could see where I was headed if I didn’t change. At the same time, I was watching far too many of my friends die from AIDS. When my best friend Shaun was dying, his family told me I couldn’t see or even call him anymore unless I was sober.So I quit.That decision changed everything.One day at a time, I built a life I never imagined was possible. I found the love of my life in Mike, and we’ve now shared 32 wonderful years together. I created PhillyChitChat, a career that has taken me places I never dreamed of, introduced me to extraordinary people, and given me the privilege of telling Philadelphia’s story. I’ve made lifelong friendships, laughed more than I ever thought I would, and discovered that getting sober didn’t end my life - it gave me one.That’s why I don’t dread getting older. Every wrinkle, every gray hair, every birthday is something I once wasn’t sure I would get to have.I don’t wish I were 30 again. I already lived 30, and I’m grateful I survived it.Today, I get to be 63.And I still have plans.What a gift. ❤️🎂 by @phillychitchat

Happy Birthday for Thursday, July 23, 2026:You are fun-loving, likable and helpful. People respond to your optimism and easygoing manner. This is a year of work and construction. You’re building foundations in your life, both externally and internally. Simplicity is key. Take charge of your health. Explore martial arts or yoga (Hmmm can I just do the treadmill and lift some weights.. I don’t like wrestling or yoga. ) Stay grounded and levelheaded. Today we are leaving Mercury retrograde well that would explain some things. Philly Throwback: Landskaters A few weeks ago, on June 26, I was out on a Friday night (with @kyleeats ) when I spotted my old group, @landskaters_philly, rolling up Walnut Street toward the Broad Street Line entrance. They were heading into the subway concourse for one of their signature skates, so I stopped to catch up with a few familiar faces. They told me it was their 30th anniversary skate. (Mike and I skated with them between 1997 to 2001, then we took to bike riding. Those potholes were crazy back then 🤣) Seeing them brought back so many great memories. Here’s a throwback photo from around 1998 as we skated down South Street. Back then, I was a fearless young buck, rollerblading through the streets of Philadelphia with a group of nearly 150 skaters at the height of the sport’s popularity. Those night skates were unforgettable and are still some of my favorite memories of the city with @tobeplantbased @tim_young ❤️i’m glad they’re still going strong!! by @phillychitchat
