All of us know Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech” but few know the key organizer and strategist who helped make it happen- Bayard Rustin. What was Rustin’s broad vision for the transformation of the American economy? How can his approach help us build a truly multicultural democracy? Join us to discuss “Rustin’s Challenge,” a new collection of short essays, two at a time. Paul Prescod is a Labor Notes staff organizer and a Jacobin Magazine contributing editor. Formerly he was a Philadelphia public school teacher and organizer with Teamsters for a Democratic Union. We will meet Tuesdays from 6-8 pm on Tuesday starting July 21st.@labor_paul by @phillyethics

The Democracy Defenders Roadshow officially kicked off its East Coast tour this week in Philadelphia, bringing together more than 100 community members for an evening of dialogue, connection, and shared learning.Hosted by the Philadelphia Ethical Society, the event featured Democracy Defenders who explored how communities across the Americas are confronting threats to democracy, human rights, and concentrated political and economic power.Rather than promoting a single model for democracy, the Roadshow is built on the idea that democratic movements grow stronger when people learn directly from one another. Across borders, communities face different political realities but many of the same underlying challenges, and international solidarity is essential to meeting them. From Guatemala’s struggle against extractive economic systems, to Colombia’s call for stronger cross-border civil society collaboration, to Mexico’s fight against the transnational forces driving violence, each speaker underscored a shared truth: lasting democratic change depends on relationships, collective action, and people-powered movements. The evening was a powerful reminder that democracy is not built in isolation. By creating spaces for organizers, advocates, and community members to exchange ideas and experiences, the Democracy Defenders Roadshow is strengthening solidarity across the Americas and building the relationships needed to defend democracy together. The Roadshow continues next in:📍Teaneck, NJ 7/25📍New York, NY 7/26📍Chico, CA 8/1📍Sacramento, CA 8/2📍Atlanta, GA 8/29📍Dalton, GA 8/30Learn more and sign up to join a Democracy Defenders Roadshow event near you at https://globalexchange.org/democracy-defenders-roadshow-speakers/ (link in bio). by @phillyethics

As the United States approaches a transformative demographic milestone—when Americans of color will become the majority and white Americans a minority—US democracy faces a test of unprecedented magnitude. This moment, the “big flip”, is far more than a matter of numbers; it is a catalyst for deep political and psychological upheaval. Once merely a projection, this demographic shift now shapes national debates, fuels fears, and incites division across party lines. This book uncovers how anticipation and misconceptions surrounding the big flip have stirred powerful anxieties, particularly among white Americans, and how these fears have been weaponized in ways that threaten the very foundations of American democracy. Andrew Ifedapo Thompson is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania. His research studies how racial demographic changes alter political perceptions and democratic commitments. by @phillyethics
