October is Fire Prevention Month. This year’s theme is, “Charge into Fire Safety. Safe Charging is a Superpower!” Focusing on your everyday charging habits can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep your home and the community safe!

The Philadelphia Fire Department encourages everyone to use their “charging superpowers:”
 1. Cheap charger? Don’t chance it.
 2. Soft surface? Hard pass.
 3. Fully charged? Time to unplug.
 4. For tools and rides, charge outside.
 5. Feels hot? Stop using it.
  6. On a flight? Keep it in sight. taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @phillyfiredept

Fire Prevention Month is about more than smoke alarms and safety tips. It’s about building the department this city depends on. This week, 85 cadets of Fire Class #205 walked through the doors of our academy, and the instructors leading will shape every one of them. These members give their time, their experience, and their patience so the next generation shows up ready.

Every class that comes through these doors makes us stronger, and every instructor who invests in them keeps our standard where it belongs. Our mission hasn’t changed, protect life and property in the @cityofphiladelphia. We do that on the fireground, and we do it right here, one class at a time.

Over the Parker administration’s first 1,000 days, the @cityofphiladelphia has made a sustained investment in public safety, and the Philadelphia Fire Department has turned that investment into faster, stronger service. Capital and equipment funding reopened Ladder 11 in 2024 and Engine 6 in 2025, replaced a decades-old dispatch system with modern, more accurate software, and put new engines, ladders and command vehicles into the fleet. The result is measurable: average engine response time has dropped from 6.67 minutes to 6.02 minutes so far this year, ahead of the City’s 6.65-minute target. The Mayor’s FY27 budget carried that commitment forward with additional investment in Fire, and the Department put it to work on the street, graduating new classes of firefighters and EMS providers and pushing smoke alarms into the highest-risk homes in the city through a GIS-targeted program that cut the installation backlog by more than 85 percent.

The Mayor’s approach to public safety, built on prevention, intervention and enforcement, has shaped how the Department works alongside its City partners. PFD has joined Police, Sanitation and Homeless Services in coordinated operations in Kensington, partnered with the Office of Public Safety on Naloxone in Black to put lifesaving overdose training into neighborhoods, and modernized its EMS system so that the most critical calls get advanced life support faster while lower-acuity calls are matched to the right resource. When Philadelphia hosted the World Cup, the Semiquincentennial and MLB All-Star Week, the Department planned and staffed every day of it. Every one of those results traces back to a City that chose to invest in the people who answer the call! taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @phillyfiredept

Today, 100 students at Philadelphia Military Academy spent their 9/11 Day of Service honoring the first responders who protect their neighborhoods every day. Working alongside HealthCorps mentors, they assembled care kits and wrote handwritten thank-you notes for Philadelphia Fire Department members, then had the chance to meet the firefighters and EMS providers behind the uniforms. Twenty-five years after 9/11, these young leaders are carrying forward the spirit of service that day inspired, and our members were honored to receive it. Thank you to the students, staff, and partners who made it happen. taken in Philadelphia Military Acad At Elverson by @phillyfiredept

Twenty-five years later, Philadelphia paused to remember the lives lost on September 11, the families forever changed, and the first responders who answered the call.

Among them were 34 City employees and retirees who went to Ground Zero and served when our nation needed them.

Today, I made a commitment to them and their families: if that service leads to a World Trade Center-related illness and loss of life, the City of Philadelphia will stand with their family and fully support them as they seek the line-of-duty benefits they deserve.

That is what taking care of our own looks like. We will remember their service. We will honor their sacrifice. And we will not leave them behind.

May God continue to comfort every family carrying the weight of that day and protect all those who serve.

The Philadelphia Fire Department wants everyone to have a safe Labor Day Weekend!

Did you know that sparklers burn at 1200° F? That’s nearly 3 times hotter than when you bake a cake!! This weekend, celebrate responsibly by using glow sticks instead of sparklers, and remember to leave the fireworks to the professionals! taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @phillyfiredept

In the early morning of Monday, August 31, 2026, at approximately 5:30am fire lights and bells were well activated at several firehouses in Northeast Philly to respond to a reported dwelling fire on the 6600 block of Horrocks St. Upon arrival of the first in companies, Engine 71 and Ladder 28 from Cottman Ave. and Loretto St., were met with fire at the 2nd floor front and heavy smoke conditions. Firefighters immediately went to work stretching attack firefighting hose lines and began an aggressive search and rescue operation through high heat and smoke conditions. An adult male occupant was found during the search and removed to our skilled paramedics and EMTs who initiated life-saving measures and transported him to the hospital. The last report we have is that he is in critical condition with burns and smoke inhalation. A lady and two young children were also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Please keep these citizens in your prayers.
