Wanted to update the grid, so here’s a blue-winged wasp on my common boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). They only appear in my south Philly yard at the end of August when this plant blooms and then I never see them again. 🥲

Now I’m not going to tell you to go out in the world and dig up plants in the wild, BUT, if there’s an abandoned field near you that you KNOW is regularly mowed in the summer, I don’t know if anyone’s going to miss a few common milkweed tubers.

Gathered in 2023 I feel like these babies are just starting to hit their stride. While they aren’t the HAPPIEST in pots (they definitely need to be staked) I do prefer that to them running wild in the ground. Their blooms smell absolutely divine and it’s a tragedy (especially for the leafcutter bees) that they’re only around for a few weeks. Let the record show I have yet to spy any monarch cats on them (they prefer my swamp milkweed) but they’re a joy to have in the backyard all the same. The first two slides are from two weekends ago and the last slide is their place of origin. Every year I see this massive field of milkweed get completely mowed down in mid-July. Not sure how many potential monarchs get taken out in the process, but It felt good to keep a few of these plants from their fate.

It’s been years since these plants were put in on the Delaware River Trail on Columbus Blvd and I feel like they’ve really come into their own. It’s aster season but really most of the year these strips of garden look so nice. Pictured are aster and calamint but you can also find plenty of other heavy hitters like goldenrod, sage, and all the grasses I can never remember the names of.

This is why I do it. From the very beginning, all I wanted from my garden was to provide habitat. For years I’ve left swamp milkweed out and magically found monarch caterpillars on them, as if magically springing from the leaves. This was the first year, though, that I saw actual proof that at least one made it.

I actually lost track of the sole cat I found (slide 4) out front of my house and feared the worst. Imagine my surprise a week later when I happened to spy a chrysalis (slide 1) while bending down to turn on the hose—perfectly hidden beneath my lobelia (slide 3). My timing was pretty lucky because later that afternoon, the inhabitant had flown the coop (slide 2).

It’s always amazing how easy it can really be. Put out plants and bugs will come.

This summer the Washington Post published a story about the increase of days with mosquito activity in the US. Our area has seen an additional 2 weeks which feels about right—usually I have all of May that I can sit out back to enjoy the yard. Not so much this year.   As I’ve posted about in the past, I spent over a year slowly cleaning all the garbage out of our alley and replacing it with jewelweed and tall tickseed. It’s a joy to see all the flowers in the fall, one of the last plants available for all the pollinators. But at the same time I’m noticing an increase of mosquitoes back there as well, despite the dunks that I’ve left throughout the yard.

How are we all dealing with mosquitoes this year? Does anyone else feel a little guilty for providing additional habitat for ALL bugs?

I have to keep reminding myself that tomorrow is the first day of October. The garden definitely is showing signs though.

1 - My white hydrangea heads are now a lovely greenish pink
2 - The red chokeberries are ripening
3 - Golden fleece goldenrod is blooming
4 - Jewelweed is in full force (and showing it’s exploding seed heads)
5 - End of the line for this year’s tall tickseed
6 - Leaves are starting to turn, including my Carolina jasmine

Updating the grid with this surprise on my walk to Passyunk. Northern sea oats, chasmanthium latifolium, just hanging out in a parking lot crack. Always been a huge fan of these cuties and their 2d seed heads. No idea how they found their way to this side street, but you love to see it.

Another late-spring bloomer I’m a fan of is Indian Pink or spigelia marilandica. This is a plant that prefers part sun and, in the wild, might be found blooming on the edge of the woods or a streambank. They only get to be about 18-24” tall and in late May create the most Seussical looking red and yellow flowers that attract hummingbirds.

Currently mine seems to be co-existing well enough with some garden phlox and ironweed. In a garden bed I could see this planting clumping and spreading. Do you have any spigelia in your garden?
