Dolly Parton: many tracks, many roles, hell of a performer. But for me her peak legacy is as ambassador of children's literacy through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. FREE age-appropriate kid's book EVERY MONTH until age 5. Sign up your kid or your friend's kid or your nephewniececousinetc through your local participating library.

Pictured is my nephew's collection. We signed him up right after his second birthday.

RIP Dolly. Thank you 🫡💐

An allotment of Bibelots, per @ohia 's ask.

Just consider how fucking perfect some of these are. Both Sparks are top tier and probs my favorites of all her books (more on that later). Williams's Mrs. Stone? Perfect. Saroyan, both underread and underrated and this collection is perfect. Boyle? Perfect, duh. The Miller takes the best part of Big Sur and makes it its own perfect standalone book.

Sara, yeah, the list you posted is complete. And yeah there are a couple outlier printings eg your Crazy Hunter. There's also an oversized edition of Snyder's Look Out! There's the curious case of The Jazz Age cover. And there's an all red Neruda, I just learned.

Wish ND still made affordable series like this or the Pearls. The recentish pocketbooks are cool and I have a shitload of em, but there's no continuity. Hate the storybooks. Closest thing out there might be Coffee House's NVLA series, but there arent tons of those, or actually maybe Sublunary's Empyrean series. The couple of those I've gotten are deep cuts and great. by @philosopherordog

Yves Saint Laurent is thee premier couturier, but less known is that he did lot of theater work, that is, costume and scenery design. One of these commissions early in his career was the 1965 adaptation of Marguerite Duras's Whole Days In The Trees.

Now obvi I got this for the Duras intro essay. But true heads may recall several posts from years ago about how I went to the massive YSL retrospective exhibit (multiple times!) at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco in 2008/9. To call it mind blowing wouldnt do it justice. For fun, throwing in a couple pics from the book, the show poster, and sneaky pics from the show taken from inside my jacket pocket, as photography was strictly not allowed. Dont think I've shared all these before.

Lore, levels, multitudes. Good Mail Day.

Unfortunately my photo of The Wedding Dress from thw exhibit makes it look like a blurry igloo, so I'm not including it. by @philosopherordog

Great Mail Day

Back when I was working a bunch in Santa Monica (2015ish) I got a paperback of this from the Friends of the Library shop for, I think, a buck. Devoured it at the library and at the beach in between gigs. A bunch of foos I'd read in high school and college and a lot more (then) new to me. Well, I eventually traded it in during the 2018 poetry/nonfic purge. And now a hardcover copy and a chance to both revisit and learn anew.

Thank you to good dude @carinofajardo for the nice trade. If anyone is holding a hardcover of Interviews with Latin American Writers get at me.

@dontcrynotearsaroundme Thinking instead of a single author project doing a book from each of these. A hell of a syllabus. by @philosopherordog

Fan-fucking-tastic Mail Day!!!

The Summer 1982 issue of the Review of Contemporary Literature featuring two of the heaviest of weights.

So, so, soooo stoked to get into this one. That said... would trade straight up for the Fall '83 Cortázar/Hawkes Number.

I dunno if you know, but On The Edge is on my all-timer short list. Everything about it just does it for me. Cremation is a step below and even then, still, Yup. Yeah. So recently when I came across Mimoun, his first novel and also first available in translation, immediate grip, not even a glimmer of a second thought.

Chirbes, man. Towering.

Good mail day.

James's face when you post a bunch of books instead of your kidney breakfast or your getting cucked.

(Full disclosure: I had liver and onions, close enough. TBD on the second thing; the day is yet young)

Following up on a theme here. Who says you can't find good books at Target?? Apparently even in 1960 people didnt care for post-war British experimental novels. From $3.75 on the jacket to a pinche quarter. by @philosopherordog
