A few months late but a moment this meaningful deserves to be shared.

In May, I officially earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. DNP, three letters that represent years of sacrifice, perseverance, prayers, tears, growth, and a whole lot of faith.

First and foremost, thank You, Jesus 🙏🏾. None of this would have been possible without Him. Through every difficult season, every moment of doubt, every late night, and every time I wondered if I had enough left in me to keep going, God carried me. His grace sustained me, His strength kept me, and His faithfulness brought me to this moment. To God be ALL the glory.

This degree means more to me than an academic accomplishment, it’s a dedication to my childhood best friend, Abdullahi, who is no longer here with me. 🕊️🤍

I wish more than anything that you could have been here to see this moment, but I carried your memory with me every step of the way. Your life, your friendship, and the memories we shared will forever be a part of who I am. This accomplishment has your name written on my heart.

To the prayers that carried me, the people who loved me, the friends and family who supported me and continues to inspire me, this degree is yours just as much mine. Thank you 🤞🏾

By the grace of Jesus Christ, this past May, I successfully defended my Quality Improvement Project (QIP) at SJFU for my doctorate degree.

First and foremost, all glory belongs to Jesus. He carried me through every sacrifice, challenge, and victory.

Jesus, thank You for giving me strength when I had none left and reminding me there was purpose in this journey. I know I did not get here on my own. 🙏🏾

My QIP, “Providing Culturally Sensitive Care to Black People with Psychotic Symptom Presentation by Addressing Attitudes and Bias of Mental Health Care Providers,” grew from what I witnessed in community psychiatry.

My project focused on helping providers recognize implicit bias, strengthen cultural awareness, and examine how assumptions influence psychiatric diagnosis.

But this became about more than earning a degree.

On February 24, 2024, I lost my childhood best friend, Abdullahi Muya, at only 29.

Abdullahi lived with schizophrenia, but his diagnosis never defined him. He was a devoted son, loving uncle, loyal friend, and someone who loved his family and community deeply. During a period of mental health distress, he went missing. Weeks later, I received news that changed our lives forever.

His loss strengthened my commitment to a mental health system where people are seen, heard, understood, protected, and supported.

A special Thank you to Dr. Sacco, Dr. Brown, Dr. Jackson, family and friends for supporting me on this journey.

To My brother, I miss you.

I pray you are in heaven playing soccer and rapping like we used to. I pray you are at peace and know how you are loved. I wish you were here to see this moment.

Your story will always be bigger than schizophrenia. I will carry you into every room, every patient I advocate for, and every effort toward compassionate and equitable mental health care.

Part of this degree belongs to you, brother. I hope I make you proud.
