It took until 2025 for Phi Palmos to have his first lead in a musical, inΒ β€œDelia D.,” a jukebox musical featuring the songs of Jonathan Manalo, which ended its three-month run last June. This September, Palmos is part of the restaging of the theatrical adaptation of the Ricky Lee novel, β€œPara Kay B.” But aside from acting duties, Palmos is also trying his hand behind the scenes. In β€œPara Kay B,” Palmos serves as creative consultant of the play, while in Eksena PH’s Shorts and Briefs Festival, he’ll be making his debut as a director in the playΒ Shit. In our Arts and Culture issue, we talk to Palmos about his beginnings as a standup, playing on the shoulders of the giants of Philippine film and theater, and why people keep returning to the playhouse. THE RSVP ISSUE On a cursory search, it is easy to see how Phi Palmos(@phipalmos) has seen a steady and already significant ride in his artistic journey. But in all of theseβ€”the growing legions of adoring fans on and off social media, the cheers in auditoriums, and his evolving acting portfolioβ€”looking at his decade-old body of work, he knows that being an actor goes beyond the roles he plays with but on the statements that go along with these charactersβ€”be it as Anthony in #AngHulingElBimbo, Rosanna in @mulasabuwan, Ada in #ZsaZsaZaturnnah, Ganda in @netflixph’s β€œDoll House”, and now on his return as Norby in @thereconciliationdinner. A vocal advocate for gender and sexuality discourse, AIDS awareness, and social justice, it goes without saying that solidifying his career means cementing a powerful platform to instill change, in the slightest ways he knows how. To him, even just landing a role he gets to breathe life to on the stage or for the camera, in itself, is a statement worth makingβ€”to give visibility to "queer, femme, unconventionally attractive gays of the world". Why? "Dahil mas marami kami," he states. In a declaration, on the heels of his 37th birthday, Palmos chooses to amplify the message that strongly underscores the continuing formation of his career, β€œNgayon ko na-realize kung bakit hindi ko nakikita ang sarili ko as an actor before. Because wala akong nakikita na kagaya ko at wala akong nakikitang kamuka ko growing up. Kaya I want what I want now, para kapag may nakakita sa akin na batang bading, sasabihin nya sa sarili nya na, β€˜It’s possible for me to be famous even if I’m normal looking, femme, queer’ because when I was growing up, I thought it was impossible. This Saturday is the start of the closing weekend of the 12th Edition of @eksenaph1 β€˜s Shorts and Briefs: WHAT IF When I directed last year, for the first time and professionally for the stage, I knew what stories I want to tell. I chose @reinpatric β€˜s Kape at Brownout because of its simplicity. Hindi ako naglagay ng burloloy o pasabog o anumang palamuti. Para sakin, gusto ko lang makitang mabuhay ang mga character na sinulat ng playwright namin. Gusto ko lang makita at makilala si Shan at Edward. Since last year, challenge na to my actors to study, rehearse play both roles. Sa isip ko kasi, sayang naman. Professional debut nila ito so sulitin na natin. And also, para sakin, it is an exercise in empathy. Mas babantayan nila at kakapitan ang isa’t-isa kapag buong-buo nilang kilala ang karakter ng bawat isa. Telling queer stories is always challenging, pero this time, at least for me, hindi. It’s like healing. So to Patrick, thank you for this story. Sana nabigyan ko ng hustisya ang kwento ni Shan at Edward. To my actors, @jumearr @kurt_valero and esp to @_palomocarlos who heed the call and said yes when we are already rehearsing for two weeks. Salamat sa pagsama sa kabaliwan kong ito. Patrick Orillos’ ( @reinpatric ) Kape at Brownout had its world premiere last night as part of the 12th edition of @eksenaph1 β€˜s Shorts and Briefs: WHAT IF. Most of whom are making their professional theater debut! Last night, my actors had to perform under a stressful situation because their props and costumes did not arrive on time. Not the production’s fault but because of greed of delivery service providers. Di mo rin naman masisi sa hirap ng buhay, but that’s another story! But true to the magic of theater, they were able to deliver a fine performance for their audience. To Dave @_palomocarlos and Kurt @kurt_valero , thank you for your dedication and tenacity. This is your professional theater debut but you did what a pro would do. Go onstage and tell the story. I am just so proud of the both of you! I’m I was not there, and I will forever regret that. But it gives me comfort that you guys soldiered on and did it! Thank you as well to everyone who assisted us, our playwright Patrick who was the fairy godmother of the these two theater kids! So please, if you have time, take time to go @halxyonclub this weekend to witness and be part of these artists journey in telling stories onstage. HAPPY OPENING THE NOTEBOOK! WHAT A WONDERFUL SHOW. A show that brought us back to the simple theatrical way of storytelling.
