In an era troubled by disinformation, historical distortion, and mounting threats to press freedom, the campus press bears the responsibility of serving as a vital vehicle for grassroots struggles and social memory.

Championing advocacy journalism, Gawad Kulê Para sa Natatanging Ulat sa Karapatang Pantao is an awarding competition that recognizes journalistic outputs created using a human rights framework.

Beyond conventional news reporting, in-depth campus journalism operates as an essential form of literary and cultural work, rooting itself in the rich traditions of alternative media reportage, which includes social realism, committed literature, and creative non-fiction. These traditions approach investigative writing, documentary storytelling, and visual narrative not only as information dissemination, but as literary craft and cultural resistance.

Submissions are open for the following:
Best In-Depth Report (News/Feature)
Best Literary Piece
Best Video Output
Best Photo Essay

The competition is open to all tertiary or college publications in the Philippines. Entries must be published within the time frame of Oct. 1, 2025 to Dec. 1, 2026.

Submissions are open until Dec. 1, 2026 via https://tinyurl.com/GawadKuleSubmission.

NARITO NA ANG BAGONG ISYU NG KULÊ!

Woven together by the struggles for land, life, and liberation, the sixth issue of the Collegian examines the crises confronting communities and sectors in the Philippines and beyond.

The issue examines police entry into union offices in UP Manila and the Commission on Human Rights’s slow handling of cases, raising questions about the protection of rights within and beyond the university. It also scrutinizes the UP System’s failure to establish a unified welfare policy, leaving campus animals vulnerable to neglect.

Outside the university, the Collegian investigates the recurring floods in Dinalupihan, Bataan and the conditions faced by BPO workers on graveyard shifts. The issue also looks into pop psychology and how it shapes the way people make sense of their struggles.

At the issue’s heart is the Ayta community of Sitio Kalangitan, Tarlac, whose ancestral land is threatened by the Pax Silica initiative. Their struggle lays bare the violence of so-called developmental projects and underscores the continuing fight against displacement and environmental destruction. Alongside this is the publication’s editorial on Palestine, which calls for solidarity with the Palestinian people in their fight for freedom, return, and self-determination.

From the cats and dogs in Vinzons Hall wearing ID collars to sheep grazing around the College of Science, every corner of UP Diliman’s vast 493-hectare campus offers a glimpse of the animals that have made the campus their home.

Whether through emotional support animals or campus strays, these critters have shared spaces with students, faculty, and other members of the UP community. Disputes over their treatment and protection have exposed the need for a comprehensive animal welfare policy, one the university has tried to tackle over the years.

Despite UP touting its line of progressive animal welfare policies since 2015, animal mistreatment cases persist across campus. From November 2019 to September 2026, the Collegian identified at least 23 incidents involving abandonment, neglect, confinement, injury, and death on university premises, conduct prohibited under the Animal Welfare Act.

UP’s efforts towards recognizing animals as part of the community also requires the university to determine how abandonment is addressed, how impoundments are reviewed, and how community members and animal welfare groups are included in decisions affecting the lives of animals in the campus.

Fresh off his historic goal for the country, UP Men's Football Team defender Joshua Meriño reflects on scoring the opener in the Fighting Maroons' title defense in the #UAAPSeason 89 Men's Football Tournament.

Meriño recently etched his name in Philippine football history after scoring the country’s first Asian Games goal in 52 years, carrying his international experience back to the Diliman as State U seeks to defend its crown.

The defending champions now shift their focus to the Battle of Katipunan against Ateneo de Manila University on Oct. 11, Thursday as the Fighting Maroons look to sustain their winning momentum and continue their march toward another UAAP Football trophy.
