#41 Photobook Club: “Windows” Co-facilitating with Helen Leung @soft.groundprod Can a single architectural detail carry an entire photobook? 🪟✨ For our 41st meetup, we are diving deep into the world of windows. Continuing our architecture thread from last time, we are thrilled to have window-obsessor Helen Leung stepping in as our guest co-host! Windows aren’t just glass and frames—they are thresholds between public and private worlds, frames within frames, and mirrors of society. We’ll be group-reading five incredible books to decode exactly how and why these artists became fixated on them: Bela Vista – Preston Hartwick Mannequin – Lee Friedlander How Sweet I Roam’d – Gabriel Lee Tokyo Compression – Michael Wolf Metropolis – Barbara Wolff Date 日期: Wednesday, 28th Oct Time 時間: 7–9 pm Venue 地點: Goethe-Institut, 14/f HK Arts Centre Language 語言: In English, supplemented with Cantonese 英語主講，粵語輔助 Max 人數上限: 12 Fee 費用: Free to join 免費參加 Registration 報名: link in bio —————————————— Photos by Helen Leung @soft.groundprod (Top Left) “Bela Vista” by Preston Hartwick. We are hosting the 3rd iteration of our photozine workshop!!! Do you have ideas that want a book form to hold? Photographs that want to be organised into a story? Join our photozine workshop — a guided journey from ideation to print, where you’ll explore a story you want to tell and shape it into a handmade zine. Over four weeks, we’ll move together through sequencing, materials, binding, and printing, transforming your images and ideas into zine form. You’ll receive practical support and creative exchange in a small, welcoming group, and the journey concludes with a group showcase + public sharing at 1:1 studio (@121bookstudio) — a space devoted to listening, reading, and making through books — celebrating your work through exhibition, conversation, and community. For this round, we’re keeping the group small and intimate, and introducing a custom photozine workbook to help you start working with your materials right away. There will also be a hands-on session on materials — exploring paper and binding choices — and a public sharing segment on showcase day to practise articulating your work to others. 📍 BOAF, Prince Edward 🗓 03/11–24/11 (Tues) + 12/12 (Sat) showcase + sharing ⏰ 7–10pm 💬 Cantonese (with English support) 💰 $2,600 | 10 spots only 👉🏻 Register here: (link in Phoboko Bio) Workshop Facilitators: Michelle Chan (@little.rice) Jimi Tsang (@jimitsang) Jethro Chan (@printingroomhk)
#40 Photobook Club: “Obliquely Architecture” Co-hosting with Nicola Ho - a wall enthusiast Architecture is part and parcel of city life. In Hong Kong, we’re constantly confronted with images of the skyline and famous landmarks. But what about other kinds of buildings? How do we perceive and read architecture—through photography, drawing, or simply by walking through the city? At the end of the month, Phoboko will hold a Photobook Club session at LUMO. In this session, we’ll look at a range of “architecture” photobooks—from Bernd and Hilla Becher to Hiroshi Sugimoto—and explore these questions together, considering how photobooks can aid and even change the way we read architecture. In English, supplemented with Cantonese 英語主講，粵語輔助 Max 人數上限: 12 Fee 費用: Free to join 免費參加 Registration 報名: link in bio https://forms.gle/g65dabeZR42DGFJL7 —————————————— Image credits: (Top) “Blocks” by Dustin Sham. 1 hr 31 min This unflinching look at teens living on the streets of Seattle was one of the first documentaries to deal with the ever-growing plight of homelessness among young people. It began as a Life magazine article by photojournalist Mary Ellen Mark and writer Cheryl McCall. Mark and her husband, director Martin Bell, then went back to Seattle to film the daily lives of the throwaways and runaways. Mark published a book of her photographs under the title “Streetwise” in 1988. Date & Time: August 13th Thur 19:30 Location: Kowloon, Hong Kong Post screening discussion with @phoboko featuring the photobook “Streetwise” and other related photobooks DM @liquidity.crisis.film.society to register * Phoboko is a community platform that brings people together through photobooks and the topics they contain. A very playful way for @lenarashi to include all her unfinished ideas into a zine!!! ….做住zine by @phoboko
@thientyly imagined his collection of photos as two rolls of Ektar film in this accordion fold photo book dummy. Here is what he had to say: Effervescence: A Glimpse of Rajasthan Thien-Ty Ly In 2024, I spent two weeks in Rajasthan shooting 48 rolls of film, over 1,500 images. From these, only two rolls were selected for this zine. The accordion format unfolds like a 135mm film strip, presenting 72 images front and back. The front side focuses on street scenes and the reverse, on landscapes. This selection celebrates the vivid palette of Ektar 100 through subtle diptych compositions. by @phoboko
This book made by @shekarino.rockyoubaby lies somewhere between documentary and mystical. The colors, pairings and sequence draws you in! He’s exhibiting the project at @ejar.ragora , opening this Saturday!!!! Come through! A Kung Ngam Village is situated in Shau Kei Wan, next to photographer Shek Po Kwan’s studio. His visual explorations, and personal interactions with inhabitants, document the unique materiality and social fabric of an area on the cusp of redevelopment. by @phoboko
A beautiful zine sequenced in color by @capture.aura made during our workshop: On Seeing the Sea and Thing By Ray Tang This is a photographic zine about preference, attention, and the act of looking. Originating from a university philosophy assignment, the work began as a simple exercise: to photograph whatever naturally caught the eye, and to consider what those choices might reveal. Moving from blue to orange, the zine drifts from the sea, open water, and distant light toward art, architecture, and human-made spaces. Through this shift, the images reflect on what we notice, what we return to, and how these quiet preferences shape the way we see the world. by @phoboko
A zine made to process the artist’s job as a divorce lawyer and desire to show gratitude to her loving family. Remains by Ness Chui “The said marriage has broken down irretrievably.” “The Respondent has behaved in such a way that the Petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the Respondent.” “Remains” is a photozine that explores the beginnings and ends of romantic connection, through the lens of the photographer’s work as a divorce lawyer and as a daughter in a loving family. Warm and affectionate photos are contrasted against cold and scathing words, showing the potentially persistent doubts that accompany vulnerability arising from intimacy as well as the ghost of memories that endure notwithstanding irreparable and fatal wounds. by @phoboko
New York by Deep Chan! Here is what he had to say: In 2025, I flew from Hong Kong to New York as a street photographer. I have always seen New York photographers’ work — consistently outstanding. As a Hong Kong outsider going there to shoot, I asked: what difference would it make? This zine explores: Is the quality of a photograph determined by the place, or by the person? by @phoboko
A look at William Yung’s dummy version of his work in progress: Pedagogy of the Compressed William Yung Pedagogy of the Compressed is a coming of age zine about reflecting about my education. Inspired by my experiences returning to Hong Kong and teaching at my childhood school, the zine maps personal and Hong Kong history into one mythology where identity exists in a constant space of liminality, nestled in a complex web of cultural and academic expectations. I hope that the zine can communicate the feelings of anxiety and confusion I’ve personally experienced and observed in older and younger generations of Hong Kongers which come from my strong feelings as an educator and artist to guide myself and others to deeper understanding and action. by @phoboko
