Modjo - Lady vs Kid Cudi - Day ‘N’ Nite

An idea that came about in one of my private DJ lessons as we are preparing for another showcase- this time at Fabric! My student liked the Modjo track (it is a banger, let’s be honest) so we were brainstorming ideas for new vocals to incorporate and we landed on this Kid Cudi acapella- we agreed it was a vibe! Do you?

It’s not Monday but it is a mashup 🤪 and this one is for the fellow early 00’s R&B enthusiasts 🤓

Life is busy and eventful at the moment so I’ve found posting mashups on the one day I have no childcare a bit..tricky!

I’m hearing this ESPRESS0 tune everywhere at the moment and I thought to give it a little throwback twist- by sprinkling this classic Mario vocal over the top.

Did you know ‘Let Me Love You’ was written by Ne-Yo? And that Mario was only 16 when he sung it? Tbh I couldn’t actually name a single other Mario track but this one featured on numerous homemade burnt CDs from my awkward, early teen, train-track-wearing, MTV cribs watching era 😅 by @phoebedabo

Quite a lot’s happened this year 😅
Professionally, things have been ticking along, but behind the scenes, we’ve been working towards this new personal chapter for..well..bloody ages! Anyway, it’s done. We’re knackered but so thankful for how things panned out in the end. (And the cherry on top was having the news that the kids finallyyyy start their new school on Monday!) 🎉💘 by @phoebedabo

One of my most-played, ‘non-dance music’ tracks.

Bobby Caldwell - What You Won’t Do For Love (1978) off his self-titled album from the same year.

Soulful, heartfelt perfection!

A lovely slow Sunday ft. baby naps, beautiful fresh blooms from last night’s wedding gig and this new turntable which has for many years been on my wish list! 🎶 by @phoebedabo

“Background” music…

A huge proportion of my professional gigs require me to create a vibe that still allows people to have a conversation over the top of the music. Clients want an atmosphere rather than a full blown party- a mood, not a mosh pit! This is often where I hear the request for ‘background music’..

Whilst the term to me sounds insultingly dreary (it somehow reduces the soundtrack to a nothing-y afterthought..) ‘background music’ gigs are among the most rewarding to me when done right! Nailing the track selections to match the environment will create the perfect ambience, and in turn, connections are made, deals are struck, conversation flows as cocktails are sipped..

Guests don’t need to be forced to dance to prove they’re enjoying themselves- sometimes a subtle toe tap or appreciative head nod is enough to know the music is enhancing the vibe rather than spoiling it..

Here are a few clips from some of my favourite “background music” sets of recent times! 🎵 by @phoebedabo

💔 11 years ago, I decided to spend my first full summer in Ibiza. I bought a car in Alicante off eBay, drove onwards to Denia and hopped on a ferry to the White Isle. It felt like such an adventure!

Upon arrival, it transpired that I’d be sharing a bedroom with a scrawny, feral kitten that had just been saved by my housemate from the side of the road. As a cat lover, this was music to my ears 😻 She was a wild and feisty little feline- see final slide(!)…so was pretty unpopular with the other four legged friends in the house (of which there were many). We named her Pips.

In time, my housemate also claimed Pips was ‘evil’ and would nickname her ‘Carrie’- which bothered me 😢 By the end of the summer, I was rather attached to Pips, so it felt right right to bring her back to SW2. We flew to Paris (where by law she was able to remain in the cabin with me, unlike UK-bound flights) and from there, we hitched a ride and a ferry through the night back to London, where we caught the first tube to Brixton, to be met by @laldabo, who escorted us home to St. Reatham!

Pips has gone by many names since…”Nooshty”, “Whoost”, “Doofty”…and has lived a very happy, cosy life, courtesy of (saint) Lal. Very sadly, after Pips’ health deteriorated significantly in recent days, we had to make the painful decision to say adiós to our deeply cherished Ibicencan import.. but we and those who met her will remember her fondly.
