Reading notes and scenes from @terankahotelformentera

1. Arundhati Roy’s memoir ‘Mother Mary Comes to Me’. An artful account of Roy’s relationship with her formidable and fearsome mother. Also an intimate look back at the author’s remarkable life – pain and beauty growing up in lush Kerala, adventure and self-actualisation in Delhi, activism and immersion in many conflict-ridden regions of India. And of course, the life-changing worldwide success of her debut novel, ‘The God of Small Things’. Roy does an incredible job of capturing the dichotomies of life with an abusive parent, as well as her own internal conflicts and contradictions. I loved this book. AR would not approve of this selfie.

1. Toni Morrison’s ‘Jazz’ – not her most widely-read novel but reportedly her personal favourite. Literally jaw-dropping from the first page. A hypnotic, violent story of love and loss, mostly set in Harlem in the 1920s. The title conveys the form; the book is stylistically improvisational and non-chronological. I’ll probably have to read this a couple more times to fully get it, but that’s ok. Who could ever hope to keep up with Toni Morrison’s mind on the first pass?

1. Marguerite Duras, ‘The Lover’. Still halfway through this one so no concluding thoughts but love the heady intensity of it. Famously the story of a young girl with an older lover in 1920s Vietnam, but also one of a daughter and her difficult mother – as I’m realising now all three of these books are, in one way or another. Unintentional on my part, some kind of literary kismet. But I’m glad it worked out this way.

Is there anything better in this life than a hotel done right?! Thank you for a few nights in heaven @terankahotelformentera. Delicious local food, perfect saltwater pool, intuitive but never overbearing service, and so many thoughtful little touches. Last week, I hosted a summer book club with @officialbyredo to celebrate its evocative Bilbliothèque scent.

My entire literary mood shifts in summer. In winter, I’m happy with rigorous nonfiction and demanding tomes. But come June, I want to feel languorous and enveloped. I want to be somewhere else, or feel more exactly where I am. I seek characters whose inner lives expand my own, and prose that has a visceral quality to it. I want to experience the interior world of someone on the cusp of something, or feel the mood of an era. I love memoir, biography, and novels that suck me in and almost take me under.

I love reading all year round, but the books I read in the summer are the ones that truly transport me. It was an honour to share some of them with a delightfully chatty and warm crowd at this event. You can find a partial list at Phoebe.substack.com

DEEP READ #52 is with @lydia_pang_ - self-described “Frankenstein, misfit Creative Director”, co-founder of @morning.fyi, and now author of a memoir titled ‘Eat Bitter: A Story about Guts and Food’, which came out just last week.

We talked about letting it all spill out, about the tension between creative purity and commercial survival, and about what it means to write a book like no-one’s reading.
