I’m still in shock. Last week I found out that my book Wayfarer: Love, Loss and Life on Britain’s Ancient Paths is shortlisted for the Edward Stanford Travel Book of the Year 2025.

I have been left humbled, emotional and bursting with pride. And utterly honoured to be up there alongside 5 authors whose work I admire greatly - @noo.saro.wiwa @herdyshepherd1 @clarammond @jeffyoung.26 and Tom Chesshyre - and if I’m totally honest I feel like a bit of an imposter to have my book up there with theirs.

As writers we never pen books to win awards. And Wayfarer, for me, was a story that burned in my soul and needed to be told, because I truly believed that by sharing my truth, unfiltered, that some people might be helped, soothed or feel less alone.

It’s not my first book, but it is my first memoir and is such a deeply personal tale interwoven with a deep dive into the history, geography and nature of the UK.

It sees me walking pilgrim paths in an effort to work through my personal demons and traumas. I’m not religious, yet through this exploration - done without ever intending to commit these walks or internal thoughts to paper - I stumbled upon a truth. That when Henry VIII banned pilgrimage around 400 years ago, he removed our right - from the poorest to the richest person - to take time out from our lives, to reconnect with our bodies, and reassess our priorities, to acknowledge where we’ve come from so we might choose the best route ahead.

I hope anyone reading it will be inspired to seek out the pathways that for centuries our ancestors sought solace on and used to find their way. Doing so saved my life, made me feel less alone and taught me that we must sometimes re-tread old ground in order to blaze a new trail. Writing this was a risk, but one I am glad I took.

The team took a 1 hour ferry ride from Tarifa, Spain -> Tangier, Morocco! This is part of our sustainable travel journey on our #albiontoatlas expedition, so instead of taking a flight from the UK to Morocco, we took trains and a boat to get to Morocco!

Phoebe, co-founder of the WeTwo Foundation says- “Travelling to Morocco from London by train and ferry not only helps dramatically cut our carbon emissions but also demonstrates to our young people - and the world - that proper adventures can begin right from your doorstep, and that sustainable travel gives us the chance to slow down, appreciate the distance, and really get to know the different cultures and languages on the way. I think all of our young people would agree that by reaching Africa slowly we appreciated the value of the journey rather than just the destination.”

Yesterday we hiked the Seven Sisters in support of the WeTwo Foundation. Blue skies, sunshine, incredible views, and the best group of people to share it with. 🤍

🥾 Just back from Italy, our own Phoebe Smith has rediscovered one of the country's most rewarding long-distance walks.

🇮🇹 The St Francis Way follows an ancient pilgrimage route through the green heart of Umbria, linking medieval hill towns, olive groves and peaceful forests while supporting the small communities that call this region home.

🌿 Walking from Assisi to Spoleto with the help of SloWays, Phoebe discovered a trail that offers far more than spectacular scenery. Along the way, she met truffle hunters, olive farmers, family-run guesthouses and locals whose villages have been given a new lease of life thanks to slow, sustainable tourism.
