We wouldn’t usually direct you away from Sudbury, but if you’re looking for something to do this week, we can recommend stepping away from all the madness and taking a trip to @fscflatfordmill to see the digital art installation ā€˜Rivers & Skies’. The installation by artists @tomhobdenstudio and @phoebestapleton celebrates artist John Constable in what is the 250th anniversary of his birth.

Flatford is a beautiful National Trust location with riverside walks, boat trips, contains an RSPB bird and wildlife sanctuary, children’s free games and activities and a lovely tearoom ( recommend not hitting the lunchtime rush for this)!

We worked with Tom here at the arts centre when we first launched, to present a family friendly digital art installation called Spark and we hope to be working with him again in the not too distant future!

Today we opened the doors of Rivers and Skies at Flatford Mill and you showed up. All day long, families, site visitors, and friends stepped into Constable’s studio and experienced something we’ve been building together for months: their own stories, woven into his skies.

Thank you to everyone who came, shared their story, and made this project what it is.

Missed today? No worries: the installation stays open all week:

Free admission.

Open: Monday 24th – Sunday 30th August, 11:00am – 3:00pm daily.
Where to find us: Flatford, East Bergholt, Suffolk, CO7 6UL.

Photos of the landscape surrounding the Granary, where we have been creating Rivers and Skies.

Two centuries later, @tomhobdenstudio and I relate to Constable’s guidance from the nature
surrounding. We hope that through Rivers and Skies, audiences will be able to feel some of what we have witnessed in this special blue and green space over the past five months!

Next week, myself and @tomhobdenstudio head into the final week of creation for Rivers and Skies!

This is the week where everything we’ve been building over the past few months will start to magically come together. Always such an exciting and nerve wracking part of the process.

Next week is the tangible bit! The peak of the iceberg, but really it can only happen because of everything that has come before.

All the research, gallery and site visits, conversations, experiments, filming, dancing, workshops, choreographing, interviews, creating with communities, actors and dancers, testing technology, recording voices and all the little decisions that have shaped the work along the way.

I love that projects like this are formed by so many different artists, perspectives, ideas and ways of working coming together.

The final week might be when we see all these pieces together, but it’s the months of process, collaboration and decision making that have made that possible.

Come and experience it for yourself!

✨ Opening Celebration

Open daily until Sunday 30th August

I’ve been looking forward to sharing this for a while!

Over the past few months, I’ve been working with the brilliant @phoebestapleton to create Rivers and Skies, a brand new immersive digital installation celebrating the 250th anniversary of John Constable.

Commissioned by the Essex Cultural Diversity Project and the National Trust, with support from Arts Council England, the project brings together the stories of local children and elders, using rivers and skies as a way to explore memory, belonging and our connection to place.

Step inside a space inspired by Constable’s studio and you’ll be surrounded by projection, animation, film, dance, community voices and an original soundtrack. As Constable’s paintings dissolve into stories gathered from people living here today, we hope it offers a chance to see these familiar landscapes in a completely new way.

It’s been a real privilege to work with so many wonderful people on this project, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve created together. I’d love for you to come and experience it.

✨ Opening Celebration
Saturday 22 August
11am–3pm (drop in any time)

The installation lasts around 10 minutes, but you’re very welcome to stay longer, experience it more than once and come and say hello to the artists.

If you can’t make the opening, don’t worry! The installation will be open daily from 24–30 August, between 11am and 3pm.

šŸŽŸļø Entry is free.

ā€˜QUIET REVOLUTIONS’ I’m so proud to be part of this film.

Quiet Revolutions is a celebration of community, togetherness and what happens when people come together through creativity.

With over 150 people credited, community dance artists and participants from across the country helped bring this story to life. Being part of it completely touched me, and watching the final cut @sadlers_wells Digital Dance Festival this weekend felt really special.

I started on the project as Assistant Choreographer, a role I was already honoured to hold, working alongside the incredible @tomhobdenstudio Then, a few days before the shoot, I was asked to step in and perform too. It was a surreal experience to find myself inside a story that speaks so closely to what I believe in and what I try to champion through my own work everyday.

I think this film will resonate with a lot of artists. It speaks to those moments where we question our value, our purpose. And comes at a time when opportunities to access the arts are scarce, and the value of the arts is increasingly belittled, this film is a reminder of why they matter.

Seeing the dancers from @giraffe_dance_uk , @dmu_dance , @jaynadanceacademy and @farnhammaltings on screen was really special. Their talent and the importance of what they do deserves to be seen and celebrated.

Thank you to @mbnewadventures for creating Overture, for making this film happen, and for continuing to invest in artists, communities and stories like this.

To the powerful team behind it all, what a pleasure it was to create with you.
