The Monster and Her Girlfriend is an animation I made for @syfy last year which aired in between shows on their channel for all of June~ I’ve never put more of myself into a project. From conception, to storyboarding, to recording, set design, puppet making, animating, editing and so so much more, I put SO much work into it out of sheer love and passion for horror and my community 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
Shout out to @threedollars21 who helped a bit w/ editing and & @johnnyrk who helped w/ leveling out my recordings and general educating me in sound design cuz I had never done a project this ambitious before and def appreciated the guidance 🥲💚

Narration in video: “Hi, my name is Phoenix Rose and I’m an animator and storyteller.
I want to talk about horror and how it is inherently queer. And I don’t mean all horror stories are explicitly gay, but horror was founded and built by the weirdos and outcasts who felt that the world around them was much scarier than the stories they wrote in the dark. I think that’s why it’s so revolutionary to see how the genre is evolving with society to reflect a shift in culture. Monsters aren’t always just faceless and evil, they are human and misunderstood. Modern horror often asks the audience to see the world from the monster’s perspective and empathize with their struggles. Now the monster can be the hero of their story. And as someone who has at times felt like a monster for who I am and who I love, I find it incredibly powerful to see that. To be told that the things we scary in ourselves and others are often just misunderstood, not evil.
And even a monster can have a happy ending.”

I use to have this fuzzy green bucket hat I got from the dollar store. I wore it every day of 4th grade. And when I broke my wrist, I got a green cast to match my hat. One day, in 5th grade sometime, my family too a trip to Vegas and my hat got lost somewhere there. By that time the dollar store had stopped selling that hat in that color so I couldn’t replace it.
I miss that hat a lot. I think that would be what I looked for first.

Self portraits doodle dump~

Visual description:
1) 2 self portraits, one based off the style of Jhonen Vazquez (invader zim), another based off the style of the cartoon chowder. Drawn with prisma color pencils.
2) mixed media marker contour line drawing. Sticky notes added saying “am I still a work of art”
3) another contour line marker portrait made with marker and chalk pastels
4) and hexagonal canvas with a self portraits made using acrylic paint pens and prisma pencils. Depicts a person with a hand over their face but the eye is still seen through the hand.
5) distorted acrylic paint pen self portrait with the words “is this skin mine?” On it.
6) messy paint pen self portrait of myself with “creeps” written on it.
7) very stylized mixed media painting with a highly shadowed and more detailed face. Almost a caricature drawing with unrealistic proportions. The background is colorful squiggly lines contrasted by the more muddied muted tones of the face.
8) a bunch of self portraits on canvas. All mixed media, from collages made of flattened plants, to paintings using real bandages. Just a lot of experimental works of art. by @phoenix_burning

While grown-ups thought doomsday had arrived — we ruled the streets.
