Cáit i nGarráin a Bhile

Cáit i nGarrán a’ Bhile is a song associated with the Clare poet Edward Lysaght, who lived from 1763 to 1809. Lysaght was born in County Clare and wrote the song about Cáit of Garrán a’ Bhile. The song is basically a celebration of Cáit, describing her beauty, her golden curls and her beautiful singing. In the final verse, the poet asks Christ to look after Cáit and her people and wishes that they would live without taxes, rent, hardship or want. “Garrán a’ Bhile” means the grove of the sacred or great tree. The song has survived as part of the Irish traditional singing repertoire and is particularly associated with the Clare tradition. I was introduced to this song by the amazing musician and singer @nualakennedymusic she does have a monthly song workshop in @glor_ennis and she has a fabulous recording of her singing this song if your search it out!! So stunning !!

I can’t believe it’s been almost two weeks since our #somdobrasil gig for @culturenight celebrating MPB in the heart of Clare

A massive thank you again to all @suilgallery and the @clareartsoffice @clarefmradio and @theclarechampion for all the support along the way- to the community who attended especially the support from the Brazilian community in Clare and beyond we are so grateful to you all. For the commentary on the introduction of Irish to some of the songs thank you form the bottom of my heart.

Most of all to @wolfe.mactire @tonysozza @bateraddrum for your musicianship and trust you were absolutely amazing it was an absolute pleasure to work with you all on this project. Now let’s think where else to take the show!!

Cucaneandaí

For all who asked here’s a little clip from yesterday’s radio slot on @clarefmradio as part of @learning_waves and @cnam.ie #onedaymanyvoices campaign.

Cucaneandaí

Earlier this year @wolfe.mactire and myself @amanda_ni_sheannain shared a video of us singing Cucaneandaí - I was introduced to the song by @nualakennedymusic during some tin whistle lessons and in fact she recommended a song collection published called ‘The songs of Elizabeth Cronin’ which I got my hands on in Custys Music shop. I revisited Cucaneandaí and the song kind of chose us it seeped into my bones. The reaction to the video we shared was powerful so we decided to record a version of it for the album. So this version all in Irish (we composed a new verse in Irish ) will be played for the first time on radio which is such a special occasion considering traditional music has such a special place in the heart of this county. It is also very very special to have Cairo arrange such a beautiful chord melody for it and for him to be singing on the track too.
I definitely was influenced by @iarlaolionaird version of the song in fact Elizabeth Cronin (known as Bess) is the great aunt of Iarla. I do recommend the book to anyone interested in this type of music.

Anyway a little birdy told me our song will be played on Out the Gap today on @clarefmradio which starts at 3pm.

Som do Brasil

We worked on adding Irish to some of the songs - one being Garota de Ipanema - The Girl from Ipanema- we translated the English to Irish but in fairness to the song I made my translation using the Portuguese so I translated this to English first and then back to Irish and it does not translate as tall and tan and young and lovely etc so in the end the Irish brought more beauty and reflected more the stunning poetry of the original song and its original complexity.

Bom Dia!! Maidin mhaith a chairde!!

I wanted to share a little post of the venue to make sure everyone knows where our gig is taking place. In the first photo you can see the entrance of @suilgallery directly at the pedestrian crossing that joins you from the exit of the temple gate car park near the round about. The gallery is connected to both @glor_ennis and @ennislibrary you can park in the Glór car park or the temple gate car park on the night an enter through the front door on picture one or from inside Glór past the bar and bathrooms at the end the door connects to the gallery also.
This will be a sit down gig so we recommend getting there early and we are so so excited to share the beauty of Brazilian popular music with you all. I have attached a little video I took in the gallery when I went to check out a few things. The gallery will be empty of art on the night with chairs set up and it’s going to be so beautiful. There are also doors to the outside like a courtyard which weather being good should be open too. The vibes are going to be immaculate.

Translation in song

There was a huge response to my stories and clips this weekend regarding my preparation for our gig for Culture Night and I will share more I promise - Here I’m sharing again a little clip of me playing with one song to see first what’s practical and how the language marries the melody - as well as maintaining integrity as I don’t speak Brazilian Portuguese fluently so I am translating to English and then to Irish ☘️ great craic!! I must say Irish and Brazilian Portuguese marry very well!
