"African migrants from countries such as Chad, Sudan and Nigeria arrived in Jerusalem as religious pilgrims and protectors of Al-Aqsa mosque.

They eventually settled permanently in the Old City, establishing a distinct neighbourhood known today as the African Quarter.

Over generations, they deeply integrated into the local culture whilst fiercely preserving their unique African heritage and roots.

Today, this community faces the same complex political, economic, legal and social challenges as all Palestinians residing in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Despite enduring systemic discrimination and displacement threats, they maintain a powerful dual sense of identity and pride.

Their enduring presence remains a vital yet frequently overlooked chapter in the diverse history of the Palestinian struggle.

There is a large population of African Palestinians living in Jericho and Jenin, West Bank and in Rafah, Gaza.

Photos taken by Andrew Courtney @andrewcourtney1936, New York based fine arts and documentary photographer who was invited to the community in 1998. As an artist, teacher and activist for social change, he has documented life conditions in areas of the world where popular struggles for survival, independence and self-determination are the day to day experiences of ordinary people." by @phoitier
