There’s something about walking into a Durga Puja pandal. 🌺

The beat of the dhak that you feel before you hear. The scent of dhuno and shiuli hanging in the air. Conch shells calling out, the ulu rising from somewhere in the crowd. Lamps swaying in the dhunuchi naach, smoke curling up towards the Devi.

And then you see her. Maa Durga, ten arms strong, eyes full of fire and grace. Somehow, in that moment, the noise fades and everything feels still.

Strangers fold their hands side by side. Grandmothers whisper prayers they’ve known all their lives. Children tug at sleeves, eyes wide with wonder. Plates of bhog are shared without a second thought. It’s devotion you can feel in your bones, and you walk out lighter than you walked in.

Have you ever seen a Raavan being made? 🔥

Bamboo by bamboo. Paper by paper. Hands working day and night to build something larger than life.

But there’s another Raavan that gets built far more quietly. Inside us.

Ten heads, they say, each one a part of us we’d rather not see. Desire. Anger. Attachment. Greed. Pride. Jealousy. Selfishness. Injustice. Cruelty. And ego, the one that holds them all together.

We rarely let him roar. We let him simmer. A grudge we never let go of. A comparison that keeps us up at night. Words we said in anger and never took back. A little pride that stops us from saying sorry. Day by day, quietly, he grows taller.

This Dussehra, as the effigies go up in flames, let’s do something braver. Look within. Acknowledge the Raavan we carry. Not with shame, but with honesty. Because the first step to letting go is seeing what we’re holding on to.

Remember the melas? 🎡

The ones that popped up across the city the moment festivals drew near. Fairy lights. Loud speakers. The smell of jalebis frying somewhere close.

The thrill of the aasmani jhoola, stomach dropping at the very top. Aiming a toy gun at balloons like your life depended on it. Toy phones that played Chaiyya Chaiyya on loop. Bubble wands. Buddhi ke baal stuck to your fingers. Watching the maut ka kuaan with your heart in your mouth. Walking into the bhoot bangla brave, and running out screaming. Throwing rings at prizes you never once won. Blowing a pipudi all the way home until someone begged you to stop. Counting every coin of your pocket money to squeeze in just one more ride.

Holding your parent’s hand tight, but wanting to run off to every single stall.

The melas are still the same. The joy is still the same. We just grew up, and got a little too busy.

So this festive season, let go a little. Slow down a little. And maybe, just maybe, visit your local mela. 🪔✨
