Its tail is less forked than that of the Red Kite; when fully extended, the fork is no longer visible. The neck and head are short. The juvenile is paler, with a pale upper wing panel (like the Red Kite) and a dark mask around the eyes. It flies slowly and steadily, gliding and changing direction easily. It is frequently seen in urban areas, waste dumps, wetlands, and grasslands, and generally avoids dense woodland. It is common and fairly widespread in Central and South America, but has a very limited distribution in the United States. It is found only around lakes and swamps with abundant vegetation. The adult male is entirely dark grey, with red eyes, orange feet and the base of his beak turning red briefly during the breeding season. Females and immatures are brown with stripes. Its tail is relatively short and its root is wide. Its rapidly tapering wings are sharper than the saker falcon and the moustachioed falcon as it rotates and rises. The adult is distinguished by its black crest, thick moustache, white throat and cheeks contrasting with the moustache, transversely striped underparts, white upper part of the chest and uniform underwings. The juvenile's whitish cheek spots are smaller; unlike the great falcon and the moustachioed falcon, these spots do not reach the eyes.
