“Bullet Brain” 🧠 Short film | Cinematographer & Colorist

During that one year in Prague, I was completely locked in and obsessed with pushing myself visually and emotionally as far as I could. With this film, I genuinely did not want to compromise on anything. I wanted to see what my images could become if I gave absolutely everything I had to them. This was also one of the very few projects where I truly felt like a cinematographer while making it.

The opening sequence leaned into warmer retro inspired browns, the pre cabin sections carried subtle blue undertones, while the woods pushed harsher greens and heavier contrast. The cabin became the emotional center of the film with warmer amber tones surrounded by deep shadows.

Almost the entire film outside the cabin was shot using natural light shaped heavily with negative fill. I shot predominantly on the shadow side and controlled spill obsessively to sculpt the shape. The cabin scenes were fixture lit, but still built around deep contrast and controlled shadows.

I shot the film on the BMPCC 6K in 6K BRAW Q0 with the Blazar Remus anamorphic set. I leaned heavily into the anamorphic character through a 2.66:1 aspect ratio, shooting almost everything wide open to exaggerate edge distortion, focus falloff, and emotional isolation within the frame. Camera movement stayed restrained throughout the film with mostly locked off tripod shots and only subtle slider movement, while the climax breaking into handheld was very deliberate.

In grading, I pulled most shots down close to two stops while expanding the toe region to hold shadow detail without clipping. I used manually created diffusion filters, layered 16mm grain, subtle edge fall-off enhancement, and different treatments for each section of the film.

This project came very close to satisfying the artist inside me, which honestly almost never happens. I’m deeply grateful to @roman_bobek for trusting me with this film, and I’m really grateful that the film has now been selected at GIFF. taken in Pardubice, Czech Republic by @photo_scientist

Cinematography and Color

Working with director @edvin_wilen was a masterclass in cinematic restraint and precision.

The entire film consisted of a very limited number of shots, only about thirty to forty, which were exclusively long takes tells a lot about the surety of Director's understanding of the what he wants.

A huge thank you to my dream camera crew, Prajeen, Shivam, Ritik, and Gustav, for making this the most efficient set I've ever been on.

During the grading process, I had full creative liberty and Edwin's full support to craft a gritty, atmospheric look.

I pushed the contrast and colors, layering in plenty of texture to achieve the vision we planned, all beautifully rendered by the re-housed Lomo standard speeds. by @photo_scientist
