Gut Feeling by Kristina Rozhkova, published by @photo_void , turns the idea of the cage into a study of captivity, control, violence and dependence. Developed after Rozhkova’s 2024 arrest in Russia, the book moves between people and animals, prisons and farms, BDSM and intimate relationships, asking how power can be imposed, accepted, desired, or even mistaken for safety.

In our interview, Rozhkova explains how her arrest changed the way she understood these ideas. She talks about feeling like an animal in a cage, returning to the animal world she had known since childhood, and searching for visual forms that could express what she had experienced.

Perhaps the most unsettling idea is that a cage does not always feel like one. It can also offer familiarity, stability and even comfort.

Kyiv-based artist Vic Bakin presents ‘Materia’, a delicate exploration of photography as matter, the follow-up to his award-winning first monograph ‘Epitome’.

Following Epitome, which looked outward at the effects of war on people and landscape, ‘Materia’ turns inward, exploring instability within photography itself. Produced during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the project shifts its attention from what photography depicts to the material from which photographs are made.
