Photos of my parents as children are incredibly rare. They grew up in a small town in northern Portugal with very little, and there are only a handful of pictures of my mom and none of my dad.

That is why this photo means so much to me. Seeing what looks like my mom petting a cat gives me a glimpse into her personality as a little girl. I never grew up with pets, so I always assumed my parents were not animal people, but this sweet moment tells a different story. My mom clearly had a soft spot for cats.
