I stand with my Indigenous sisters and respectfully dedicate this body of work to the Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit People who have been stolen from us. I pray with you, I mourn with you, I fight with you

I had the opportunity to capture Dolores Huerta at a conference in Chicago back in 2013. It was one of my first big gigs with my first professional camera. I didn’t even know I would have the opportunity to photograph her before I took the gig, it’s surreal to think back at that now. She was the true essence of a Queen. What I remember most was just being in awe of her presence, the wisdom and power she shared with the women in the audience, and the way she moved a room with her words 🥹😭 I’ll forever be thankful for the opportunity to be in her presence while having a camera in my hand. We lost a real one 💔 but we’ll always have the strength in the words she left us with,
“Si Se Puede”✊🏼

May you rest is peace and power Reina 🙏🏼🕯️✨

Feliz Día de la Independencia Colombia! 💛💙❤️

Sharing a few of my favorite self-portraits from my “Indigenous Bloodline” series 📸🪶A little fun fact: the mountain background came from film scans I took during a road trip through Colombia, from Cali to Ipiales, Nariño (where my family is from 🥹).

Te amo Colombia! Siempre te llevaré en mi corazón 🙏🏼🇨🇴❤️‍🔥⛰️ #PhotoByAyala #colombia🇨🇴 by @photobyayala

Homenaje para Mictēcacihuātl 👑🕯️💀🪶

“Homenaje para Mictēcacihuātl” is a photo tribute to pay my respects to Mictēcacihuātl, the Aztec Goddess of the Dead, and to honor the Indigenous origins of Day of the Dead.

When I was learning about the origins of Dia De Los Muertos and the symbolism of La Catrina I was led to the story of Mictēcacihuātl. Although not too many writings exist of the Queen of Mictlan (the underworld), there are Aztec drawings of her that do exist. She was honored among the living and the dead and celebrations were done in her name pre Spanish conquest days. They tried to erase our Native existence but our ancestors still live on through us 🤎🪶✨
