WORKSHOP: ANALOG Experiments
Sundays (Oct 25, Nov 1): 12:30pm - 4:30pm

In this pair of single-session workshops, students will learn how to intervene, play, and invite a bit of chance into analog processes.

In the Oct. 25 session, we’ll tackle Sabattier (or solarization), Chemigrams + Photograms (or Rayographs) in the darkroom, with and without negatives. Using objects, light and resists, we intentionally disrupt the prescribed evolution of the silver gelatin print.

The Nov. 1 session focuses on the use of daylight for photograms, chemigrams and lumen prints.

Some familiarity with analog photography is recommended. RSVP at the link in our bio💫 taken in Chapel Hill, North Carolina by @photofarmnc

LAST CALL: Join our guest instructor, Gabriel Moises Rivera from New York City’s @gowanusdarkroom, for our Analog Photo II workshop!

Fine-tune your B&W printing skills and learn how to dodge, burn and employ flashing and split toning. Many of you may already be familiar with these concepts from Photoshop or Lightroom, but don’t know how to translate that understanding into a wet darkroom practice.

On day 1 (10/14) we’ll learn age-old strategies for making sophisticated darkroom prints. We will discuss “thin” and “dense” negatives, consider tonal values and contrast and learn varied techniques for optimizing your negatives.

On day 2 (10/21), students will continue to work on their craft in an Open Studio+ format with more printing in the darkroom and hands-on instruction.

Reserve a spot using the link in our bio!

REMINDER: Come check out our collaborative workshop with @peel_gallery on Thursday, October 15!

In the workshop, students will learn the hybrid workflow of developing analog color film and scanning the negatives. We begin at PHOTO FARM — where participants will develop their 35mm color negative film (C-41) — and then set off to nearby Peel Gallery to learn best practices for scanning.

Bring your exposed film to the workshop and go through the development process. Once it is dry, head to Peel and digitize your roll!

Prepare by purchasing and shooting 1 roll of 35mm color negative (C-41 process) film in advance of the workshop. And, please bring an external hard drive/thumb drive for your time at Peel.

Come join us at PHOTO FARM SALON: critique nights, a gathering (BYOB optional!) for photographers to give and receive constructive, thoughtful feedback on ongoing bodies of work. The meetups allow 4 photographers to share between 20-25 images, or the equivalent, of their work — along with a brief, informal project statement — from a work-in-progress series. Prints are encouraged, although work shared digitally is perfectly acceptable. Filmmakers are also welcome to show shorts (~10min).

If you would like to present your work, please sign up at the link in our bio. For all others attending, just come on by (no RSVP necessary) and take part! Punctuality is appreciated.

Folks who consistently provide feedback will, if they would like, receive priority for a critique spot in future sessions to ensure that everyone who contributes to the group has an opportunity to share their own work.

WORKSHOP: ANALOG Experiments
Session One — Sunday, October 18, 12-30 – 4:30pm

In this 3-session workshop, students will learn how to intervene, play, and invite a bit of chance into analog processes. (You can sign up for one, two or all three sessions – each will focus on different style of analog experimentation!)

In this first session, we start by building pinhole cameras. From there, we make photographs on site and develop them in the darkroom. Pinhole camerawork is an invitation to engage with history and to see firsthand how simplistic yet otherworldly “sun drawing” was and is.

No experience is necessary for this session. Parental consent required for children under 18.

REMINDER: There is still some space to join our Contact Printing workshop this Saturday, Sept 26! Come learn how to work with the Van Dyke Brown (VDB) and cyanotype processes of contact printing.

You will walk away having learned about chemistry and how to coat paper, employ UV exposure, make contact prints and finish with archival practices.

Bring your black and white analog or digital negative(s), no larger than 5X7. Feel free to bring extra paper (unbuffered, 100% cotton) and/or semi-transparent objects to use in photograms as well — dried plants, lace, you name it! And, bring a snack/drink for lunch.

No prior darkroom experience is required. Parental consent is required for children under 18 years old.
