2026 has been a crazy wedding year, and i finally got to experience the hybrid wedding (guest) photographer special!

to be honest this is something i adamantly insisted i’d never do because the pressure is REAL when it’s for someone you’re so close to (especially when they’re a damn photographer too!!!)

but how does one say no? to know these two is to love them, and i could not have been more honored to be the one to document alicia & jaynanne’s special day…

as a photographer this day was a dream to capture: 2 stunning brides, the coolest venue in town, having fun playing with my film camera along the way. as a guest i spent the whole day realizing how far alicia and i have come since our college radio show days where i first learned about “her new friend jaynanne”

to my dear friends bryan and ariana, your wedding was so electric that it needed an entire moodboard on main

where to even begin? to say my heart is full would be an understatement but the closest thing i’ve got. this weekend had everything: an olivia rodrigo drop, bottomless lobster bisque, memories and lore that will be passed down for generations to come

to the californians both old and new that i spent the weekend with, thanks for letting me be a part of the crew! i thoroughly enjoyed every second of it, until we meet again ❤️‍🔥 (though let’s be real, i’ll probably book a flight next week)

everyone and their brother reminiscing on 2016 has me in my feels, too… but from a photography standpoint. if you knew me in 2016, then you knew that i had a camera in my hand every damn day, everywhere i went. i was taking pictures constantly, figuring out how my camera works and discovering presets for the first time…. shoutout to my beloved VSCO batch that never let me down❤️‍🔥

it was hard to narrow down what to post here, considering the amount of work i have from documenting throughout the year. hell, i even did video, too.. and i documented my entire summer and turned it into a 50 minute movie

it’s crazy to see just how much my work, style, etc has changed since then. at the time i thought nothing of my work, but i’m proud of 18 year old gena for creating some crazy nostalgic stuff that would’ve done numbers on tumblr

major credit to my friends who put up with me, then and now. the ones who let me shove a lens in their face 24/7 and learned how to properly light when i needed it. it really was us and my 50mm prime lens against the world, and i wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! mwah 💋 by @photogena

leveling up to a new phase in photography where all my friends are getting married and suddenly taking pictures have a whole new meaning

and that meaning is a great one, one where you get to see your best pal at their absolute happiest with the most amazing woman ever, and you proudly get to pull out your camera (and nervously, because it means so much to you that you don’t want to F it up)

you blink and 20 years go by…. little 2nd grade gena and grace’s minds would be blown. 2026 is off to a good start because i know i get to see them tie the knot soon

2025 you were an interesting year… and on the way out you tried to tear me down in ways that the writers room at SNL couldn’t even conceptualize

one thing i was reminded of these last few weeks is how amazing the people in my life are, so i am dedicating this post to them to commemorate all the shenanigans this past year brought us together. cheers to whatever this was, and whatever is to come in the future

i’ll end this the same way i ended my recap last year:

to all those who didn’t make it to see 2026, we carry them with us in the next leg

thank you to everyone who stuck with us this year, whether you wanted to or not. that’s what new years are all about, a new start and a new mindset!

heathrow roboto mcshaffrey, just like his namesake heath ledger, has left this world far too soon (after a scuffle with nasal lymphoma in which he KICKED ITS ASS left right and center for 7 months)

heath and i met in the back corner of a cat cafe where he hid from the world, and after climbing down and setting one paw on my knee, the rest was history. i adopted him immediately into a world of chaos as i switched jobs and apartments a week after he moved in. through the almost 3 years we had together we went through a lot of big changes, a lot of grief and a lot of happy times. i’d like to think that we each showed up for each other for the years that we needed it most

heathrow was an icon, the life of the party and the most handsome boy. every time i came home we would gossip together at the kitchen counter and then spend all night curled up together on the couch. simply put, we were roommates, and though his 5 AM wakeup calls were my kryptonite, i’d do it every morning over again just to have him around forever

it’s hard to find the words to describe my sweet boy after such a defeat. the biggest comfort is knowing that he had such a fan club here on earth, and an even bigger one waiting in the ether. i’m sure him and nugget are gossipping about how late i sleep in, and without a doubt he’s got a front row seat to a drag show with ben. i’ll catch him in the next lifetime where we can split a churu and watch season 2 of heated rivalry as the universe intended

like his second namesake, i’m certain he’s flying high from cleveland to 🇬🇧

had the displeasure last week of downloading my college google drive in its entirety before kent shut us out (go flashes 🤕) and found many interesting gems along the way

lots of work i was not expecting to reminisce on: work i thought i hated at the time, work i simply wasn’t proud of then or now, work that i actually killed but didn’t think so when i did it. it was a very interesting journey that i did not think i’d be discovering again so soon!

anyways, in all of that i found a lotttt of work that i actually did love but never bothered to share. so if you see me throwing some old work here, it’s new to you so mind your business 🤧 please enjoy whatever the hell was happening here, but if anything, it’s just something fun! 🤭🤭🤭 by @photogena

heart is full this week from last weekend’s events. 2 takeaways:

1) a reminder that your most sober friend can plan one hell of a bar crawl
2) when planning, make sure that karen menyhart will be in attendance
