An overlay of Standard Mil-Spec lenses and Boomslang wide field of view lenses. Same tube type used for each photo and with the same SNR value of 23 and change. The color difference is due to the overlay to help demonstrate the different field of views.

When viewing the images as an overlay the field of view gained becomes quite apparent. What isn’t as easily discerned in photos is the slight dip in resolution with the Boomslang as compared to standard Mil-Spec lenses. With Boomslang, there is a change in the MTF curve of the system as the resolution of the tube is effectively being stretched over a larger area. In a headborne practical application this isn’t hugely impactful at normal distances. When magnified, such as attached to a telescope, or at greater distances where PID may be challenging as it is, the dip in system resolution and effective shift in MTF curve can be noticed.

As with everything night vision there is always give and take in one way or another. For the field of view gained it seems absolutely worth it for a headborne use system. Using a Boomslang lens equipped device back to back with a standard Mil-Spec lens equipped device the difference in field of view is incredible. However, if you’re planning to attach your device to a telescope or using it in a magnified use we would recommend standard Mil-Spec lenses. Or, if you plan to use a Boomslang equipped device in a magnified use we would recommend selecting a tube graded higher than 64 lp/mm resolution. Overall, we’re really enjoying these lenses and are impressed with their performance for how much field of view you gain. by @photonisdefense

Would you run this helmet setup? Rate it 1–10. 🔥

Contrary to popular belief, plenty of users still prefer a monocular. 🤝 Would you choose this over binos?
