As Australia has been forced to confront its tarnished racial history, a local dispute over a series of mountains that are Indigenous spiritual sites has become a flashpoint in a national debate, @photosparsh reports at the link in our bio.

Who gets to decide what’s of spiritual importance, & what it means to honor & preserve it?

BIRDSONG premieres online today with Guardian Documentaries as a Vimeo Staff Pick! Link in bio to watch.

We started working on Birdsong nearly 2 years ago, inspired by our interests in language, migration, and music. The film explores the dying whistling traditions of the Hmong people of northern Laos.

Thank you to our contributors - Neng Chi, Chia Por, and Jong Sue for sharing their stories with us.

It’s been an incredible year of seeing our film connect with filmmakers and audiences. We had our international premiere at @sxsw before travelling to numerous festivals such as @sundanceorg London, and picking up Special Mention: Best Documentary Short at @psfilmfest.

Recently we were shortlisted for the Best British Short Film award by @bifa_film, Best Short Doc by @griersontrust, and Best Short by @idaorg. It’s a reflection of the hard work and creativity of the most wonderful community of collaborators, we can’t thank them enough and are lucky to have found them.

A huge thank you also to our partners at @aestheticamag and @audible_UK for making this project possible and the @guardian team for their fantastic support.

We’re so excited to announce that our film, Child of Empire, is having its world premiere at Sundance 2022. The animated VR documentary immerses viewers in one of the largest forced migrations in human history: the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan.

We’ve been inspired by the real life accounts of three Partition witnesses from both sides of the border. They’ve been voiced by the brilliant @_adilhussain and Salman Shahid. 2022 is the 75th anniversary, so this moment is extra special for us. One of the characters is directly inspired by my nana himself.

The film has been a labour of love, made possible by the team at @project.dastaan and @anzufilms. We can’t wait for you to see it - Sundance 2022 runs from Jan 20-30 in Park City, Utah.

When I first visited Zangla, I had just finished my first year of university.

I taught in exchange for my stay, but I learnt a lot more than I taught, and in retrospect, I didn’t really know all that much about the world to teach anyways. The nuns welcomed me wholeheartedly either way - it was the best summer of my life.

9 years later, I went back with an album full of memories.

Some things have changed, but some are still the same. The kids I taught are all grown up, and most have moved away from the nunnery to the city, but the chomos are still as chirpy as always. The winding road - so bumpy that it used to be a 2 day journey via Kargil - now only takes a smooth six hours from Manali, but the mountains still loom like cathedrals over the horizon, unfathomably tall in the distance. And although my beard is starting to grey, I still know nothing about the way the world works. taken in Zangla Monastery by @photosparsh

In many folkloric traditions of the Himalayas, the stray dogs of the forest are said to be the passed spirits of old wanderers, guiding you safely on your journey lest you befall the same fate. I don’t know where the ever hardworking mules and yaks fit into that narrative, but here’s a handful of frames of these beautiful animals against the snow taken in Sikkim by @photosparsh
