Phunky Phat Graph-X!

This one is a salute to the people who helped give Bay Area rap its own visual identity. Before the needle even dropped, these covers told you what kind of world you were stepping into: big ideas, bold colors, custom lettering, larger-than-life portraits and details that made you stop and study the sleeve. Every cover had its own personality, but you could still recognize that Phunky Phat Graph-X touch.

Just look at the artists and records represented here: @e40 ’s “In a Major Way,” @rappin4tayofficial ’s “Off Parole,” 3X Krazy’s “Sick-O,” Totally Insane’s “Back Street Life,” Black Dynasty’s “Deep East Oakland,” 187 Fac’s “Fac Not Fiction” and Funk Mobb’s “It Ain’t 4 Play.” Their work also reached Master P and Silkk the Shocker, with “99 Ways to Die” and “The Shocker.” Different artists, different neighborhoods and different sounds, all captured in artwork made to be looked at as much as listened to.

I’ve always loved this side of collecting: pulling out a record and taking in all the details, the concepts and the names behind the cover. Phunky Phat Graph-X understood that the sleeve was part of the experience. These designs helped make the records feel like pieces of their own world, and they still bring that era back the moment you see them.

RIP Tracy Underwood. Your creativity and the legacy of Phunky Phat Graph-X are still right here in our collections. Much respect to Thomas Underwood and everyone who helped make that name mean so much. Any favorites in this pile of classics?
