Why do so many Indian moms start walking like a penguin after 60? 🐧

And more importantly… is it actually normal?

That side-to-side walking pattern is called a waddling gait, and it can often be associated with weakness in the hip muscles, especially the gluteus medius and hip flexors.

When you walk, you spend a moment balancing on one leg. Your gluteus medius helps keep your pelvis stable during that phase.

If it’s weak → the pelvis drops → your body leans to compensate → and your walk starts looking like this.

If your hip flexors are also weak, lifting your leg becomes harder, making walking even more challenging.

And it doesn’t stop at walking.

Poor hip and pelvic control can contribute to:
• Lower-back compensation and back pain
• Knee instability and increased joint stress
• Poor balance
• Higher risk of falls

So the next time you see your mom walking like this, don’t just dismiss it as “age.”

Getting older is normal. Getting weaker is not inevitable.

With appropriate strength training, balance exercises and mobility work, older adults can improve their strength, gait and confidence.

Comment “PARENTS” and I’ll send you a simple glute activation routine to get started. 👇

We’ve been conditioned to believe that better running = better shoes.

More cushioning.
More technology.
More expensive.

But the truth is, the “perfect” running shoe doesn’t exist.

What works for one person may not work for another.

Your feet, your strength, your running technique and your adaptation all matter.

If you’ve spent years running comfortably in a particular type of shoe, suddenly switching to an expensive, heavily engineered shoe just because someone says it’s “better” doesn’t automatically make you a better runner.

Maria Ramirez’s story is a great reminder:

Don’t confuse expensive with better.

The goal isn’t to find the most expensive shoe.

It’s to find what allows YOUR feet and body to run comfortably, safely and consistently. by @physio.akash

“After 60, you shouldn’t sit on the floor.”

You’ve probably heard this advice before.

But the real goal shouldn’t be to avoid the floor, it should be to stay capable enough to get down and get back up safely.

For senior citizens, being able to sit on the floor and independently get back up isn’t just about flexibility or strength. It can be an important functional and safety skill, especially if they ever fall when they’re alone.

That’s why we focus on 4 basic movements:
→ Toe touch
→ Deep squat
→ All fours
→ Lunge

Master these progressively, and everyday movements like getting down to the floor, getting up, playing with grandchildren, or recovering from a fall can become much easier.

Aging should mean becoming wiser, not becoming afraid of movement.

We regularly conduct FREE strength training classes for people 50+ at One Rehab Physiotherapy.

If you want your parents to join, comment “PARENTS” and we’ll share the details.

Electrotherapy has become one of the easiest things to hate in physiotherapy. But is it actually as useless as social media makes it sound?

The truth is, electrotherapy is a tool, not a treatment philosophy. IFT and ultrasound aren't supposed to magically fix chronic pain or replace exercise. Their role is much simpler: symptom modulation and, in some cases, temporary pain relief.

And if reducing someone's pain helps them move better, exercise better and participate in their rehabilitation, why should we be ashamed of using it?

At the same time, the foundation of MSK rehabilitation should still be exercise, progressive loading, physical activity, sleep, stress management, nutrition and lifestyle.

So no, I'm not saying electrotherapy is the answer. I'm saying we don't need to unnecessarily demonise a tool just because it's not the most exciting thing to talk about.

Use electrotherapy when it makes sense. Use manual therapy when it makes sense. But don't let fancy techniques become more important than actually making the patient stronger and more capable.

The goal isn't to have the fanciest treatment. The goal is to get the patient better.

“Why is she doing HYROX during pregnancy? Has she lost her mind?”

These are some of the exact comments I saw under a pregnant woman’s HYROX video.

And people in the comments had already decided—

“She’s putting the baby at risk.”

“You shouldn’t be doing this during pregnancy.”

“Just rest.”

But wait.

Pregnancy is not an illness.

If a woman was regularly running, strength training, playing sports, or doing high-intensity training before pregnancy…

then in an uncomplicated pregnancy, with appropriate medical guidance and necessary modifications, she can often continue being physically active.

But that does NOT mean—

“I’ve never worked out before, and now I’m going to start HYROX in my seventh month of pregnancy.” 😂

Absolutely not.

Context matters.

What was your training history?

Is your pregnancy uncomplicated?

What has your doctor advised?

All of this matters.

In fact, the right kind of exercise can actually help women stay stronger, fitter and more comfortable during pregnancy.

And the woman we’re talking about?

Her name is Jenneec.

I looked into her background and found out that she’s a professional coach, a HYROX athlete, and has been training in this space for a long time.

So clearly, this isn’t someone who randomly woke up one day during pregnancy and decided to try HYROX.

Much respect to you, ma’am. You’re an inspiration. ❤️

And for everyone else—

Next time you see a pregnant woman working out, don’t automatically discourage her.

Pregnancy doesn’t mean movement needs to stop.

It means movement needs to be managed intelligently.
