As a physiotherapist, I’m not just here to treat injuries. As a registered healthcare professional I have a responsibility to recognise the signs of abuse, listen without judgement, support people safely, and help them access the right services. by @physio_sophie

Trabecular bone = higher cell turnover rate + higher energy demand = more affected by energy changesCortical bone = denser + slower cell turnover rate = less affected by energy changesBut all bone is affected by energy availability and training loads #physiotherapy #exercise #overload #injury #bone by @physio_sophie

“It’s just growing pains.” Or… is it?Back pain in teenagers is common - but it shouldn’t be ignored. In active adolescents, particularly dancers and athletes, persistent back pain can sometimes be linked to specific conditions such as spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, and Scheuermann’s disease. These conditions may present with ongoing back pain, stiffness, or reduced tolerance to training, and they benefit from careful clinical assessment to guide appropriate management. The encouraging news is that teenagers are very resilient. With an accurate diagnosis, appropriate load management, and targeted rehabilitation, most young people improve well and are able to return to the activities and sports they enjoy.Early assessment helps ensure the right treatment approach, avoids unnecessary rest, and supports a safe return to sport.I have a particular interest in working with dancers and performing artists, where spinal loading, flexibility demands, and training schedules place unique stresses on the spine. If your teenager is experiencing ongoing back pain, you’re welcome to book an appointment for an assessment. (For younger children or situations requiring additional expertise, I will refer on where appropriate to ensure the best care.)💬 Dance parents: comment “GUIDE” below and I’ll send you my free quick-reference guide to back pain in young dancers. As always this is not clinical advice so please seek proper assessment when needed#backpain #CYP #physio #exercise #sports dance by @physio_sophie

Not all injuries show up the way we expect them to.If you’re dealing with persistent bone pain but your X-ray has come back “normal,” it doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real. Early bone stress injuries often don’t appear on X-rays, which can make the process confusing and frustrating. That’s where MRI becomes so valuable. MRI scans can detect the early changes in bone that X-rays simply can’t see, helping us identify stress injuries sooner and guide the right recovery plan.If something doesn’t feel right in your body, trust that feeling. Your symptoms deserve to be heard, investigated properly, and supported with the right care. 💙If you’re unsure about ongoing bone pain or a diagnosis that doesn’t quite add up, don’t hesitate to reach out for advice or guidance. Sometimes a conversation is the first step toward getting the answers you need. This post is for educational purposely only and is not intended to be clinical advice. Always see a trusted clinician in person if you are concerned#stressinjury #runners #physio #sports #exercise by @physio_sophie

Injuries rarely happen because of just one thing. It’s usually a combination of factors building up over time.Sleep.Nutrition.Training load.Stress.When several of these are off at the same time, the body’s ability to cope with training can drop - and injury risk can increase. This infographic highlights some of the key factors that influence injury risk and how we can try to “control the controllables.”That might mean:• managing training load• prioritising sleep and recovery• fuelling properly• recognising when life stress is highSmall adjustments in these areas can sometimes make a big difference to how your body copes with sport and training. That said, this is only a simplified overview.People with other health conditions, very young athletes, or those competing at elite or professional levels may have additional factors that need to be considered. If you’re dealing with persistent pain, fatigue, repeated injuries, or concerns about recovery, it’s worth seeking advice rather than pushing through. And if any of these areas are worrying you, I’m happy to help.👉 You can book in for an assessment with me (link in bio or DM me) and we can look at the bigger picture together - identifying possible risk factors and working out practical ways to manage them. by @physio_sophie
