my favorite stills from the music video ♡ ‧₊˚

it was three very intense and full days shooting this, driving all the way to the beach and back in one day, chasing the sunset, nearly freezing to death in the water, the sand all over the car seats, @melss.bht working day and night to make the outfits on time, the countless fittings at her place laughing the stress away, shooting at my music school for a little symbolism and also because the carpet looked great, the 42-floor infinity elevator, but most importantly my dad on wind duty holding the leaf blower in my face through ever scene ♥︎ by @phytocene

my fourth EP ‘bird songs on power lines’ is out now ㅤㅤ♡

this year i became really interested in birds for some reason. i learned to identify the birds i always hear during my walks in the forest with my dad. ever since i was a little girl, he passed on to me his knowledge of the nature that’s surrounding us. he taught me the name of every plant, how to forage berries and flowers. once i’d gone through most of the plants, i moved on to birds. i find the complexity of their songs fascinating. i think it’s probably the earliest form of music that ever existed. i wonder: why do they sing? what are they saying? one day i walked past a flock of birds perched on power lines, and it struck me that they looked a lot like music notes.

this EP is a reflection on my place as a woman in the music industry. it’s a reflection on pop music, on its current political significance, the fact that it’s a 90% female music genre, where our bodies are at the center of the performance, commodified within a capitalist and misogynistic musical alienation, where we are products destined for a market rather than the tangible expression of our deepest musical identity. what kind of music would i make if i wasn’t a woman? this EP is a search process for my true musical self, a desire to free myself from the shackles that damage what is most precious to me: music. it’s an exploration of more conventional pop, followed by a rejection of it, an attempt at emancipation, which ends with an instrumental track, a refusal to sing and to conform to the codes of what i’m supposed to be. i think i’m a bit like those birds on the power lines, balancing on the wire of an industry that holds all the power, a bird that stops singing when you walk past it, a bird that the society of the spectacle strips away from its deepest individuality.

so excited to announce the bird songs on power lines merch capsule collection in collaboration with @interfeer.studio ♥︎

my friend melissa and i have been working on this together for the past few months. each piece is hand-made and unique, thought out as wearable mementos of the EP, designed to flatter all body types. some of the materials used are upcycled, we worked with scraps from the custom outfits and music video props, with sustainability at heart. available on the merch table at my release party next week and online after the EP launch. very limited edition!!

❦ black jersey modular corset top
hand-made in france by freelance pattern maker @stm_noemi, 100% viscose jersey (natural fibers), modular neckline (cowl neck, off shoulders or asymmetrical wear options), adjustable corset-like strings secured by satin ribbon loops on the sides, light blue embroidery at the bottom, two sizes available (S-M & L-XL), fits sizes XS through XL

❦ tracklist bag charms
each charm symbolizes a track on the EP:
- chrome self is an asymmetrical mirror-like pendant, you can’t really see your old self in it but it’s still there somewhere
- 25 is a jack adapter attached to a corset string, symbolizing how romantic relationships slow women in their music careers
- one hundred things is an actual scrap from my outfit on the song’s artwork
- my purest form is a lie is a torn apart piece of sheet music (rachmaninov to be exact), a scrap of my true musical self
- bird songs on power lines (the EP interlude and title) embroidered on a black cotton strip in light blue thread
- scrutiny (EP instrumental track) is a synth knob, a symbol of production, to honor female producers

one week already since my purest form is a lie is out ♡ i was very nervous releasing this track and ended up being overwhelmed with your kind words and support. it’s the best feeling in the world when you make music that sounds more like you and people instantly notice it does and connect to it even more because of it. i can’t wait to share the rest of my EP with you next month, and to perform it live for you at the release party in paris on june 25th!!! love you ❦

my purest form is a lie is out now ㅤ♡

when i started doing phytocene shows, i was sitting down behind my two keyboards: being a huge fan of james blake, i had an identical live setup. which means i wasn’t fully visible. i mean, my face was, but not my body. and i got comments like ‘it’s too bad, we don’t see you’, kind of like the comments i get when i play piano recitals in a mask. well for starters i’m sure james blake never got these kind of comments. i’m a woman, meaning an object of contemplation that must remain visibly accessible at all times. so i said ok, i’m going to buy a wireless mic and stand up on stage. but then my music was too static and calm to dance and make my body visible so i made pop music. i don’t listen to pop music. in fact i don’t really even like it that much. yet here i am making these silly little pop songs. it’s no coincidence pop music is 90% female artists. so recently i started having a heartbreaking existential crisis: could i ever really know what kind of music i would make if i wasn’t a woman? is it even possible to absolve myself of all the social constructs i constructed my whole self around? i grieve something that doesn’t exist. in this song i tried to reconnect with the things i know are true to my heart. trying to make something i like. something i would find interesting. yet i have this fear all musicians have, this pressure to make something marketable, this fear to see our art crushed by capitalism, not allowing ourselves to make what we really want to make. sometimes i think my music sounds like how my makeup looks. but does it look like me? how can i really know? what if i can never make music that looks like me? anyway thank you for reading this philosophical rant. love you guys. hope you like the song ♥︎

my purest form is a lie is the last single of my upcoming fourth EP and it will be yours on may 8th ㅤ♡

i think this might be one of the most meaningful and deepest song i’ve ever made. it’s the first stop on my journey to make music that sounds more like me, which is the hardest thing ever. this is a song about music and about the female experience of making it. i can’t wait to share with you this track that is very very special to me. you can pre-save in my bio as always. love you all so much ‧₊˚ ⋅
