Moving Lines is a visual narrative of the journeys taken by people who left their hometowns in search of a better life.

In 2016 I started working on what I consider one of the most important projects of mine, The Stories Behind a Line, a visual narrative of six asylum seekers’ routes, designed with Alex Piacentini – @piaaaac. In 2021 I was contacted by Silvia Costantini – @viou.costantini – journalist who proposed using it as a starting point for a new project that – with the same approach – would tell other stories. Over the years she has collected new testimonies with great care, in Trieste, Rome and on the Italian-French border. I am genuinely moved to share this new project today, created by Silvia Costantini, Alex Piacentini and me.

Moving Lines tells the stories of M., M., M., B., S., O., I., A., R., F., M., M. and R. – asylum seekers who crossed countries and borders to reach Europe. The project aims to give shape to these stories and these journeys, walking step by step alongside those who have travelled them, tracing their path into a line. For every step of the journey, information was collected about the means of transport and the number of days spent travelling.

The interviews are ongoing. Moving Lines is not a finished project — quite the opposite. Its launch marks just the beginning, because the ultimate aim is to hand it back to people on the move who want to share their stories and leave a record of their lives, until one day every journey is equally possible, with the same rights and the same natural freedom for everyone to seek a better life.

The narrators were interviewed with the support of @ics_ufficiorifugiati and @liberi.nantes.

Via Palmanova
by Giacomo Silva and Alex Piacentini
.
This series documents the resistance of palm trees in urban contexts in an ironic take on urban photography. The artists use a WhatsApp chat to exchange photos of out-of-place palm trees. The booklet is built on contrasts: the happiest of plants in the most shabby, inhospitable places, basic office paper and precious hand-sawn binding.
The format replicates that of the smartphone, device that is at the heart of the process used to take, store, transmit the images. The zine is enclosed in a risograph-printed hand-sawn envelope made with repurposed sewing drawing dotted paper, and includes emoji sized palm stickers that readers can use to brighten up their neighbourhoods.

About the artists
Giacomo Silva and Alex Piacentini both work as designers, technicians and artisans. One of them is rooted in printing techniques, the other in digital media. Both like to explore boundaries of the media they use, and do so in both their commercial work and in their research.
