I made this portrait when I was around 8 years old. It shows my magnificent sister, being her cheerful, loving, stimming, most authentic self. Growing up as an autistic, chronically ill, disabled girl in the 90’s, it’s safe to say she’s been through a lot. Despite experiencing exclusion and isolation, she refused to let it harden her big, ill, persistent heart. A heart that clings to life and has found its way back from a coma. She knew there was still so much to teach me
- about intimacy, vulnerability, the (in)finite nature of life.
- about care, connection and interdependency within an oppressive ableist system that views disability as „inferior“, a „burden“ and disabled people as disposable.
- about living in a sick and visibly disabled body - white, cis, thin- yet never able to fit into dominant beauty standards.
- about language, its power to ex- or include realities, to devalue and dehumanise, to welcome and embrace.
- about how communication expands beyond spoken language. To still be able to engage and connect even without „raising your voice“.
- about holding space for what is shared and meeting one another.
- about resting and divesting from the capitalist idea that worth is synonymous with productivity.
- about how to not abandon yourself for the sake of others. To stay true and close to yourself, no matter what.
- about how kindness is taken for weakness but is actually a brave choice.
- about real, tender, love-as-a-verb-kind-of love.

Throughout her whole life and even beyond she found her own ways of resisting. Al(l)ways love.

„Because I would argue that “disability justice” is simply another term for love. And so is “solidarity,” “access,” and “access intimacy.” (…) And the creation of this space is an act of love. And if we can’t love each other and ourselves, then what good is any of our work to get free? If we can’t reach out to break isolation and the walls we’ve put up between each other, as disabled people, then we will have already lost before we’ve won any political battle.“ @miamingus

To break is to lose the ability to hold,
to change form,
yet broken pieces can still belong
to one another
