We scrape it off walls and call it ugly. 🌿

But that moss and lichen? It’s some of the most quietly extraordinary life on Earth.

Lichen isn’t even a plant. It’s a fungus and an alga living as one body, so complex we still can’t recreate it in a lab. Moss stores staggering amounts of the planet’s carbon. Both are signs of clean air and living soil.

And there’s a spider in this photo. 🕷️ You almost can’t see it, and that’s the whole point. It’s a lichen huntsman, and it spent millions of years learning to disappear into the moss and lichen on this bark.

But that only works if the bark is left alone.

I found it at The Linger Farm in Bhagamandala, whose tagline is simply “Do Nothing.” It’s meant as an invitation to slow down and be with nature. But it turns out to be how nature works too. The moss, the lichen, this hidden spider: all of it survives because the land was left alone. 🌿

Next time, maybe let the green stay.
