It’s a busy week of joyful things for Picl! @cardiffanimfest Cardiff Animation Weekender, which we’re thrilled to be sponsoring, kicks off on Friday; Tonguing, @carys_eleri’s gorgeous neuroscience-comedy-music show is on at @walesmillenniumcentre til Friday; AND Out of Time, the Street Art Opera we created with @claire_victoria_roberts, @gisellous and Music Theatre Wales, is screening in Cardiff tonight and tomorrow!

Out of Time is a darkly comic and fantastical tale of a future apocalypse in which nature reclaims its beauty and abundance. Instead of human destruction and depletion, plants and animals rebel against extinction, disrupting everyday life to saturate streets and cities with kaleidoscopic colour. As the natural world thrives, is it too late to apologise to the Earth? From whimsical to psychedelic, an operatic rage ensues.

We’re so thrilled that Out of Time won the “Best Welsh Film – Performance Award” at the Focus Wales Film Festival last week! Thanks @focuswalesfilm!

You can catch Out of Time in Cardiff...
TONIGHT – Grange Pavilion, Grangetown
TOMORROW NIGHT – Loudoun Square, Butetown

And outside of Cardiff...
24.05.25 – Harbour, Saundersfoot
28.06.25 – Rhondda arts festival

All showings are FREE and start at 9:30pm

Six years ago I met @carys_eleri and had the total joy of animating for her clever and chaotic musical-comedy-neuroscience show Lovecraft (Not The Sex Shop In Cardiff), still one of the most fun projects I’ve ever worked on.

So when Carys asked me to collaborate on her new show Tonguing, I jumped at the chance, before I knew this show would be even more special.

Tonguing is a hilarious and moving deep dive into how the pandemic has rewired our brains and changed how we communicate. It’s laugh-out-loud funny, super cathartic and healing. Carys is a powerhouse, not just funny but an incredible performer (there’s an opera number in this show that blew my mind!) She’s created a gorgeous and rare space for us to laugh about and process what we’ve collectively been through but don’t often get to stop and reflect on.

This show is a gift and I hope you can go and see it. It’s on until Friday at @walesmillenniumcentre.

I’m going again tonight, so see you there if you’re going! taken in Wales Millennium Centre - Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru by @piclanimation

March is B Corp month 💚 (yes we have left it till the very last day to post about it!)

Did you know we were one of the very first animation companies worldwide to become a certified B Corp?

B Corps are leaders of a global movement of people using business as a force for good – companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, independently verified by non-profit organisation B Lab.

Certifying as a B Corp is a rigorous process that took our director Lauren about 8 months to complete (to be fair she also had a newborn baby at the time)! The process helped us be really thoughtful about our working practices, our environmental impact, and how we help the people we work with to serve their communities.

We have to recertify as a B Corp every 3 years, which helps us track our progress against our ongoing social and environmental goals – we're actually busy working away on our recertification right now.

You can read more about our experience becoming a B Corp at our link in bio. A drawing of a wind farm with the Picl Animation logo and the B Corp logo, which reads: Certified B Corporation. This company meets the highest standards of social and environmental impact. by @piclanimation

This year at Forbidden Worlds Film Festival, audiences can enjoy some of the newest genre shorts from filmmakers near and far!

Over the next several weeks, we’re going to spotlight the shortlisted titles that audiences can enjoy on Bristol’s former IMAX screen and then vote on to win the festival’s Audience Choice Award.

THE HOUNDS OF ANNWN (2023, UK, Dirs: Beth B Hughes & Bryony Evans)

A wounded warrior returns to their village but is hunted by a pack of dogs. After a desperate pursuit, they confront their past to find peace in their future.

@boss_berb is a director and animator based in Cardiff who has worked on many children’s series for various networks, such as CBeebies, Milkshake, ITV, S4C, Netflix, Apple TV+ and Sky. @thehoundsofannwn is her first short film as writer and director.

@doodle_curls is an animator and clean-up artist originally from the valleys of Carmarthenshire, with just over a decade’s experience in the animation industry, from children’s television to feature films and music videos. The Hounds of Annwn is her first directorial credit.
