Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?
By Shel Silverstein

Synopsis: A kid and their pet rhinoceros enjoy their unique friendship together.

Why do I recommend? This book is sweet and silly, full of imagination (imagine a rhinoceros jumping rope, playing hide and seek or helping Grandma's make donuts!). Kids will love the possibilities suggested here and may even be able to think of more of their own!

Themes: humor, comedy, imagination, pets, friendship

Unicorn and Yeti: Friends Rock
By Heather Aryis Burnell
Illustrated by Hazel Quintanilla

Synopsis: Friends help each other swing, learn to share treasures and try each other's favorite foods.

Why do I recommend? This is the first book my early reader has been able to read outside of her curriculum books, and it actually has a story! The pictures are adorable and it's a sweet story of friendship.

Themes: early reader, friendship, sharing, taking turns, trying new things

What To Do With Your Whirly Swirly Thoughts
By Jennie Allen
Illustrated by Nadia Gunawan

Synopsis: Sometimes we have happy thoughts and sometimes we have sad, mad, or scary thoughts, but we get to decide what thoughts we let our brains spend time on.

Why do I recommend? This book gives practical advice to kids to help them take their thoughts captive and the biblical backing to do so.

Themes: thought patterns, growth, mindset, Bible, taking thoughts captive, positivity

Synopsis: Axolotl siblings have an axo-scuffle before the axo-pologize and resume the axo-giggles!

Why do I recommend? I love how this book demonstrates a great example of conflict resolution in whimsical ways with endearing characters! If your child is part of the axolotl craze like mine are, they will absolutely love reading about their favorite animals!

Themes: conflict resolution, siblings, reconciliation, axolotls

Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown
By Eric Litwin
Illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

Synopsis: More and more groovy dogs keep showing up to jam with Joe!

Why do I recommend? This book is written by the same author who writes Pete the Cat stories- your kids will love this if they love those! The story is rhythmic, includes math in a very fun and approachable way, and shows resiliency as the dog has to continually account for new characters joining the jam session and always sees the bright side!

Themes: repetition, math, music, new friends

The High Street
By Alice Melvin

Synopsis: A girl is walking down High Street and visiting each store to find all the things she needs on her shopping list.

Why do I recommend? I love the repetition, rhyming, and exploring a sweet town through beautiful detailed illustrations. Kids will also love the way the pages are structured and open out. The story also includes a relatively low emotionally charged example of things not going exactly our way, but moving on and making the best of it.

Themes: rhyming, repetition, remembering, exploring, making the best of it

Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet
By Kelly DiPucchio
Illustrated by Bob Shea

Synopsis: A pet goldfish wants a pet! Suspense builds as we learn what kind of pet will work out.

Why do I recommend? This book is hilarious! Kids get to try to predict each pet and whether they will work or not.

Trigger warning- A fly, who the goldfish briefly thinks could be his pet, gets smashed pretty suddenly and unexpectedly-most will think it's funny, but it may surprise some!

Tiny Worlds
By Brittany Cicchese

Synopsis: Boy loves to create and explore tiny worlds and quiet places. Grandma offers bigger views and more friends, but he invites her to zoom in, slow down and notice the little things.

Why do I recommend? This beautiful book encourages kids to notice how much is going on around them if you look closely. It offers a great example of a quieter, artistic, sensitive boy, who we don't see represented often enough. I also love the relationship he has with his grandma and the detailed illustrations.

Themes: slow living, nature, noticing, quiet, serene, details

Don't Trust Fish
By Neil Sharpson
Illustrated by Dan Santat

Synopsis: Hilarious smear campaign against the species of fish... Who could be behind it?

Why do I recommend? My kids and I may have laughed more during this book than any other book we've ever read. I recommend this book purely for the hilarity, but there's also complexity to trying to determine who wants us not to trust fish, as well as the basic biology of understanding comparisons between species types and the complexity of fish.

Themes: humor, smear campaign, ulterior motives, biology

Fritz: A Mushroom Story
By Kelsey Garrity-Riley

Synopsis: Introverted Fritz loves quiet and calm, while his best friend, extroverted Pip, loves loud music and crowds. Fritz navigates enjoying his friend while also caring for his own needs.

Why do I recommend? This book is full of wisdom and whimsy! Introverts often have a harder time connecting in social scenes, but this does a lovely job at showing how much an introvert can enjoy themselves behind the scenes, as well as selectively join the crowd for the activities they want to opt in for. I loved how Fruits realized he needed a moment and stepped away, and then let his friends know when he was ready to join back in. The illustrations ooze whimsical cottagecore vibes and will absolutely delight.

Themes: introvert/extrovert, friendship, self-care, hobbies

Peter Rabbit Gets Stuck!
By Frederick Warne

Synopsis: Peter Rabbit wants to get some berries from Mr McGregor's garden but keeps getting into sticky situations. Several friends offered to help him but he wants to do it all by himself. Eventually he realizes that the bravest thing he can do is ask for help.

Why do I recommend? Kids love to be self-sufficient and not need help, but sometimes it is best to reach out. This book does an excellent job of demonstrating that through a beloved character. There are flaps on every page and even a center page with a vertical illustration, and kids will love the interactive features.

Themes: being brave, asking for help, interactive, self-sufficiency, adventure, classic

I Wish I Could Fly
By Ron Maris

Synopsis: A turtle wishes he could do all the things his friends can do, but ultimately realizes that he has special talents too and he can appreciate the way he was made.

Why do I recommend? It's natural for us to compare ourselves with others and want talents that others have, but it's good to be reminded that we all have different qualities that make us special.

Themes: being unique, contentedness, talent, nature, comparison
