Viviane Sassen • D.N.A, Flamboya, 2007 'Viviane Sassen's first monograph, Flamboya brings together photos from various trips to Africa. Although Sassen grew up in the Netherlands, she lived in Kenya from the ages of two to five as her father worked in a local hospital. Her first return to the continent was in 2001 at the age of 29. Flamboya includes primarily portraits that Sassen made collaboratively with her subjects, some spontaneous and others performative. Some pages in the book have a smaller width, setting up interesting relationships between the images. As it happens with memories or thoughts, photographs are not isolated: they form a fluid stream of associations and connections'. #vivianesassen #picturedat by @picturedat

Irving Penn • Spanish Hat by Tatiana du Plessix (Dovima), New York, 1949 “In the days when well-dressed women wore hats, Tatiana du Plessix was a highly regarded milliner with a design studio at Saks Fifth Avenue. She was also the wife of Alexander Liberman. The model, Dovima, posed for Penn and most every photographer of the era.” #metmuseum #irvingpenn #picturedat by @picturedat
Fan Ho • Approaching Shadow, Hong Kong, 1954 #fanho #picturedat #hongkong “What made his work so intensely human is his love for the common Hong Kong people; coolies, vendors, hawkers selling fruits and vegetables, kids playing in the street or doing their homework, people crossing the street… As per Mr Ho; ‘I love Hong Kong and I love Hong Kong people’’ He never intended to create a historic record of the city’s buildings and monuments; rather he aimed to capture the soul of Hong Kong; the hardship and resilience of its citizens.” #artsy by @picturedat
John Rawlings • American Vogue, March 1943 #johnrawlings #condenast #vogue “The introduction of American photographer John Rawlings to Vogue’s visual team in 1936 was certainly one of Conde Nast’s best strategic moves. At a time when opulence, pretentiousness, and theatrical lighting were prevalent in fashion photography – fueled by the European school led by the British Beaton, the German Horst, and the Russian Hoyningen-Huene – Nast and Vogue’s editor in chief Edna Woolman Chase decided they needed a change of direction and placed their bets on a talented but unknown twenty-four-year Midwesterner. The change of direction would take a few years, but the man to lead it, John Rawlings, would become one of the most prolific and important photographers of the twentieth century, with more than two hundred Vogue and Glamour covers to his credit.” #bygonefashion by @picturedat

Thierry Mugler • Angel campaign, White sands, New Mexico with Jerry Hall, 1995 “Introduced in 1992, Thierry Mugler’s first scent, Angel, was a game-changer in the fragrance world. The bold, brash bottle (it was blue! and star-shaped!) looked like nothing else in the department stores. And the scent itself was unapologetically sweet and rich, with notes of vanilla and chocolate. (It’s considered to be the first “oriental gourmand” fragrance.) The ad campaigns, initially photographed by Mugler himself, were also iconic in their own right.” #thierrymugler #jerryhall #angel #thecut by @picturedat

Steven Klein • Untitled, 2008 “If Bruce Weber’s hard-bodied, shiny, happy Abercrombie boys and girls set the tone for sexually charged fashion photography for much of the nineties, and Terry Richardson’s trashy, bisexual leer helped usher in the new millennium, then Steven Klein’s sexually ambiguous, quasi-commercial transgressiveness is the new fashion frisson. There’s a seedy glamour to his work, but it’s a carefully calculated seediness: never so out-there as to be alienating, and enhanced with the best lighting and sets Condé Nast money can buy.” #nymag #simondumenco #stevenklein #picturedat by @picturedat
