Woamy biofoam is now protecting Pidät’s ceramic Koti birdhouses. ♻️🌱

We’re excited to share our collaboration with Woamy and Pidät, a Finnish ceramic brand, founded by Mika and Julie Tolvanen. For international shipments of Pidät’s elegant ceramic Koti birdhouses, the challenge was clear: improve protection, keep the existing multipack box, and stay fully recyclable.

Woamy fiber-based Strong Board solution combined with hinged foam inserts help keep each product box securely in place during transport, reducing movement and improving cushioning.

“Ecological design and recycling are part of our core values, including our packaging. We use recyclable, fiber-based packaging for all our products, but the previous solution for Koti was not enough to prevent breakage during transportation. That’s why we reached out to Woamy. Together, we were able to quickly develop a solution that fits our existing packaging, protects our product and remains recyclable together with the box.” says Julie Tolvanen, designer and founder of Pidät. says Julie Tolvanen, designer and founder of Pidät.

Beautiful design deserves packaging that protects it, without compromising on circularity. ♻️🌱

Pidät is a Finnish brand of everyday objects started by two designers. We aren't a typical business.

We make products we want for ourselves, and then we put them out into the world for others who might want them, too. The word 'pidät' has three meanings in Finnish: 'You hold, you like, & you keep.'

For those of you following this process...a sneak peek of STOP relaunch (coming this summer!)

Maroon, Petrol, Natural tan, and Pebble grey.

(Over) one year ago, when we decided (to try) to move production of our much-loved STOP doorstop to Europe, we wondered if it would be possible for our tiny brand.

Fortunately, we found a small compatible shoe sole factory just outside Porto who is as enthusiastic about the idea of making a doorstop using rubber shoe sole techniques.

Can't wait to show you the results.

Hi guys! Thanks for all your questions, as it spurred me to do a post showing the little things we have added to make your KOTI birdhouse safe and cozy.

Photo 1: The climbing wall we developed with the factory to give chicks some extra grip (there's a debate about whether it's actually needed, but we included it - as it anyway keeps the chicks entertained!). The size of the hole and the height from the floor were taken from BirdLife International guidelines.

Photo 2: Actual nest built in the birdhouse on our balcony. The floor area size comes from the chickadee version of the tried-and-true round Gilbertson birdhouse, with extra room in the corners. The triangle is Studio Tolvanen's innovation, and you can see that the area actually used is the round area in the center, so no worries there!

KOTI comes with a wood hanger made from heat-treated Nordic Swan certifed pine (so it's rot resistant without any toxic chemicals). It's angled on top so the birdhouse hangs against the wall but can be easily removed by lifting up and out. The back is open so it can be cleaned each nesting season. We have left ours outside in Finland during -30 C (even poured water over it, let it freeze, and brought it inside and immediately under hot water). That said, it is ceramic and if you want to be absolutely sure you should bring it in over the winter.

There is space around the wood hanger to allow for variation in handmade ceramics and also to give a little extra venthilation inside.

Humans have integrated ceramic or stone nestboxes into architecture for centuries. It seems counter-intuitive, but ceramic or stone have been used in warmer climates because they absorb heat and slow the transfer to the inside, so the result is that interiors stay cooler longer in extreme heat. At night when it is cooler outside, it provides gentle warmth - generally, overall temperatures don't swing as much as in a wood box. Orientation matters. Birds will more likely choose a nestbox not facing prevailing winds and with the hole oriented away from the hottest afternoon sun.

Stay tuned for a post on the history of ceramic birdhouses! by @pidat_design

It's time to hang up a birdhouse! REMINDER: it's also time to clean out last year's nest if you already have a birdhouse hanging. KOTI by @studiotolvanen is designed to be easy to clean - just lift up to release it from the hanger and the backside is open.
