Bheki Mseleku, 2003.

I call this "The Lost Bheki".

I didn't know this photo of Bheki existed until a few years ago. I found an article about street artist/muralist @justinnomad. The story featured a giant mural of Bheki Mseleku in downtown Joburg.

Justin credited Pierre as taking the photo on which he based his artwork. I looked into it and found that the image appeared on the cover of Bheki's posthumous album.

I have the envelope with the negatives from the shoot. But this one is missing. One strip has 5 negatives instead of the usual 6.

So this beautiful, almost ethereal, image of Bheki exists only on the internet. A few pixels floating in the ether.

I have no negative, no print, no scan.

Sipho Gumede performing with Sakhile, 2004.

This was one of Sipho's final performances, he died a few months after Pierre took these photo - making pictures two and three especially poignant. A final bow from a legend.

Sipho grew up playing a pennywhistle and a homemade guitar built from a five-gallon tin and fish gut.

He became one of the country's most influential musicians by blending traditional African rhythms with jazz, funk, and soul.

Victor Ntoni, 2003

Victor Ntoni was known for his impeccable skills on bass, but more so for his composing and arranging of music. Ntoni found inspiration for his music and compositions from township culture; the corner street vocal groups and big bands who played at social gatherings and shebeens.

Born in 1947 in Lange township in Cape Town, Ntoni got his love for music from his mother, a singer, and his uncle, a pianist. He learnt to sing and play guitar before switching to the double bass.

Later, Ntoni caught the attention of Abdullah Ibrahim who became one of Ntoni’s mentors. He featured on Ibrahim’s album, Peace.

As the apartheid era heightened, Ntoni went into exile with other SA musicians. In 1979, he started composing and arranging music for Hugh Masekela and his band in New York. His songs were highly complex and required indigenous talent from South African musicians to be performed.

Ntoni was an exceptionally talented composer. His music was an infusion of local flair that reflected hope and love of South African culture during a time when hope was scarce for many. The pain and hardships many marginalized musicians went through during the apartheid years seeps through Ntoni’s compositions.

He expertly mixed all the elements of township culture and traditional South African Jazz into his music. In the 1980’s, Ntoni returned from exile. He died in 2013.

Isaac Mtshali, 2004.

Isaac Mtshali was a drumming God, probably the best to ever come out of South Africa.

Starting in the Cannibals in the 60s (listen to whatever you can find), he went on to co-found Stimela.

The drummer on Paul Simon's Graceland and the rhythmic backbone to Lucky Dube's biggest hits, Mtshali's contribution to African music is phenomenal. A Legend.

Those Facebook memories are disconcerting.

This just came up on my feed. New Years Eve 2013. Pierre's last one. My mom in the middle. She is now in stage 6 dementia and has no memory of either of us.

I am now the only keeper of the flame of all our memories. Life is beautiful. Sad and wonderful all at the same time. by @pierrecrocquet

Tsepo Tshola, 2003.

The Village Pope.

#tsepotshola was the lead singer of Sankomota, the first band to ever record an album in Lesotho.

They were recorded by Lloyd Ross and Warrick Sony of Shifty Records on November 11, 1983. The album was self-titled, and it had nine tracks that collectively ran under 50 minutes long.

Siphokazi, Joy of Jazz, Johannesburg, 2007.

Yesterday was the anniversary of Pierre's death. Finding an image like this, unscanned in a folder, 13 years later, shows the depth of his archive.

Look at the contact sheet, there are at least five great shots worth printing. Exceptional talent.
