Kahidlaw: Filipino Love Songs, cassette mixtape

*𝙆𝙖𝙝𝙞𝙙𝙡𝙖𝙬 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.

I started this personal playlist over a year ago because I ached to remember my home away from home. It has since evolved into a beautiful love letter to the Philippines: its people, culture, and sweet sweet love songs.

To my grandparents Plenio and Marylou Buenacosa, who we called Tatay (Father) and Nanay (Mother) 💌

𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 & 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙:

Rememory awaits our (re)collection, ready to be stumbled upon; defying time (past, present, and future) and space (geography, borders, etc.). it’s a collection of forgotten memories. So is it possible to miss a memory you never forgot/experienced? How does that (re)memory morph and exist within the collective rememory? These are a few questions I’ve been pondering while reading Jeong-eun Rhee’s Decolonial Feminist Research: Haunting, Rememory and Mothers.

I think of the diasporic longing for homeland in the context of “the haunting,” which occurs when we encounter our m/others rememory. When we are engaging through the act of (re)membering and forgetting, we are simultaneously yearning for y/our homeland: the interconnectedness of place, people, memories (lost or yet to be found), taste, smells, and even the sounds.

Music as a site for rememory ❤️

“The haunting demands you to remember those parts of the past disappeared and dis(re)membered from what (you think) you remember into a new past that you now must imagine.”
