We are are pleased to announce that MAKE has been awarded an Honorable Mention Design Award and the coveted Detail Award at the 2026 @aiabaltimore Excellence in Design Awards Celebration!! Congratulations to @mdsciencecenter and the entire team that helped to 'make' this project possible!

JURY COMMENTS:
The MAKE intergenerational maker space installation at the Maryland Science Center stands out for its ingenuity and precision. Every detail feels deeply considered, reflecting the time and care invested in crafting a design that is at once inspired, simple, and provocatively clear. The project’s restraint heightens its impact—each element contributes purposefully to an experience that feels both fresh and intentional. Particularly compelling is how the intervention ties seamlessly into the existing structural framework, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of context and continuity. It’s a piece that celebrates detail as concept, merging technical rigor with creative insight.

MAKE is also the recipient of this year’s Detail Award. The Detail Award is given to projects that bear an exceptional aspect, detail, or specific design feature that the jury feels represents excellence deserving of specific honor. by @piklstudio

Meet @piklstudio one of our featured voices in Architectural Design at Design Intersect Baltimore.

Founded by architects Pavlina Ilieva and Kuo Pao Lian, PI.KL Studio is a Baltimore-based architecture, design-build, and development practice whose work spans commercial, hospitality, workplace, urban housing, and community-focused spaces.

Their work is rooted in a holistic approach to design—connecting architecture, construction, development, and the communities their projects serve.

And there’s an important connection to this year’s Design Intersect: PI.KL Studio led the restoration of Library 19, the very space where we’ll gather on October 10. by @piklstudio

We are honored to announce that we have been given a Citation Award in the category of Small Projects at the 2026 @aia.maryland Excellence in Design Awards!!

MAKE is made! @mdsciencecenter 's new maker space is now open to the public! Our lifesized 'Erector' set was a childhood dream of ours to take inspiration from this nostalgic science object and manifest it into a spatial intervention highlighting the details, connections, and parts that assemble together to build the whole! Taking advantage of the tremendous space and natural light, the new maker space would be very porous and celebratory of the existing space.

Come experience MAKE and the rest of the amazing installations at the Maryland Science Center!

Co-Founder and Principal Kuo Pao Lian is back where it all began. He returns to @marylandinstitutecollegeofart and @mica_archdesign to teach spatial design principles, a course he holds dear and has enjoyed teaching in the past.

"it's so great to be teaching again. I took a short hiatus for a bit to continue to expand our practice and build new relationships and collaborations in Baltimores diverse art and design communities. I look forward to evolving and refining this course curricula and hope to find more teaching opportunities moving forward." by @piklstudio
