When we were growing up, my sister Anna developed a reputation as a scaredy cat. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It seemed she was afraid of everything: spicy food, small spaces, dogs, escalators, elevators… and as we grew older and learned about more frightening things in the world her list of fears - plus the things she vowed never to do and places she vowed never to live because of those fears - only grew. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Today’s her birthday and I think it’s time we revise that narrative. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I’ve seen her do so many brave things recently, like:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
1. Start a private, premier childcare agency⁣⁣
2. Perform in front of expert, highly critical crowds of *thousands* of people (Bahamians at Junkanoo)⁣⁣
3. Ride on jet skis⁣⁣
4. Learn to sail⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I know she was being brave because she *told* us she was afraid… and would then march on and do the thing. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Anna, you’re an amazing example of what we can create when we’re willing to try big new things and push past our comfort zones. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Today’s a major birthday for you and I want to recognise you for this major shift! You inspire me and challenge my assumptions all at the same time, and that’s a beautiful gift you give me as your sister. ❤️❤️❤️⁣⁣

Happy happy birthday, and I pray you keep growing, keep shining! Your community-minded, family-oriented heart means we all benefit so much when you lean into you. 🥹⁣⁣

It’s easy to see our loved ones, and ourselves, as one thing only. It’s comfortable to keep it that way for our entire lives. But that one thing can be confining and frustrating, in so many ways. ⁣⁣
