Vandalism? Or Urban Renewal?

A film by Pineapples and Concepts.

Directed by @greezycated

Same wall, years of nothing. Then this happened.

No permit. No commission. Just paint, Ronaldo, and a weekend from local artists who wanted the block to feel alive again.

Vandalism? Or the renewal this street actually needed?

Mural Artists Credit: Kiama, Roro, Cliffix, Black Mwabe, East Money, Prime Ink, 56 AP.

Paint or permission? This wall stayed the same for years until local artists gave it a new face. No permit. No commission. Just Ronaldo, color, and a weekend.

Some call it vandalism. Feels more like the street finally got noticed.

Kirinyaga is one of Kenya's leading banana-producing counties — contributing roughly 7.67% of national production (AFA, 2024). But standing in Kutus market, what strikes me most isn't the crop. It's the informal infrastructure moving it: no cold chain, no processing plant nearby, no formal collection point. Just market days, transporters, and traders making it work.

Farmers here have been asking for a local collection centre for years. Until then, this is what the system looks like — from smallholder farm to market stall, held together by hustle.

First in an ongoing series documenting the everyday economies and spaces of our surroundings.
