Mike Weaver is a former NHL Hockey Player and the owner of Defense First Hockey Camp in Toronto, Canada. Mike is well-known for teaching the "thinking part" of the game at his camp as well as co-founding the web-based coaching platform CoachThem. Data should not be ignored.
What happens when the coaches dump out the pucks at the beginning of practice? I recorded 798 shots of AAA players shooting at an EMPTY net from the top of the circles and I was shocked to see that 45% never even hit the net- these lost opportunities hit the glass and the post!
The data also shows that only 3% of the shots that were recorded as goals actually did go Post and In. What's worse is that the coaches actually excused their misses by saying it's okay because, "The players miss the open nets because they're trying to go Post and In." Unfortunately, the reality is that players shooting at empty nets lose focus and shoot with less power (watch your players and see if I'm wrong). Players need to shoot with purpose whereby each shot is hard and has an intended destination. Good coaches don't need to yell at their kids, "Hit the Net, Stop hitting the goalie's chest and Don't hit the post!" Good coaches Teach!

The PING is a fun teaching tool that will condition your player to go Post and IN the Goal. And what's best is that you won't need to tell them to train, they will be motivated to ring the PING, and, the PINGs signature sound is contagious. Motivating kids to want to train correctly is just good teaching!
