For this part of Chinese tea time we are back at Markthalle Neun in Berlin, trying silky tofu as dessert with caramel sauce and goji berries.

Tofu as dessert might sound unexpected if you mostly know tofu as something savory, but in many Chinese food traditions, soft tofu and douhua can be sweet, delicate, comforting, and almost pudding-like.

This version with caramel sauce and goji berries is such a good example of how Chinese desserts can be light but still rich in texture. It is not about being overly sweet. It is about softness, warmth, balance, and that gentle contrast between silky tofu and sweet toppings.

Chinese Tea Time is exactly about this: using food as a starting point to talk about culture, memory, and the different ways we understand taste.

What makes a cup of Eight Treasure Tea so special?

At Chen’s Teehaus, this traditional blend includes rose buds, chrysanthemum, green tea, goji berries, red dates, hawthorn, American ginseng, and pang da hai (malva nut). Each ingredient brings its own aroma and character, creating a tea that is floral, naturally sweet, and wonderfully refreshing.

One of the most unique ingredients is pang da hai (胖大海), which has long been enjoyed in Chinese tea culture for its soothing qualities and distinctive flavor.

🎥 In Chinese Tea Time – Episode 4, Part 1, Dan welcomes our new conversation partner Kaichen to explore the stories, traditions, and flavors behind this beautiful cup of tea.

🇨🇳 Chinese Tea Time, episode 3, part 1.

This time, we are at Tantan Douhua in Markthalle Neun, talking about spicy food, Sichuan flavors, and LGBT culture in China.

Food is never just food. A bowl of spicy douhua can open a conversation about regional Chinese cuisine, identity, community, and the different ways people express themselves across cultures.

In this episode, we talk about why spicy food has such a strong place in many parts of China, especially Sichuan food culture, but also how conversations around queerness, visibility, and LGBT life in China can be much more complex than people outside of China often assume.

From Berlin’s Markthalle Neun to Chinese food culture and queer identity, this is exactly what Chinese Tea Time is about: using food as a starting point for bigger conversations.

Chinese Tea Time, episode 2, part 5: beef noodles at Shaniu’s House of Noodles in Berlin.

For this episode, we are exploring Chinese noodle culture through one of the most comforting dishes: beef noodles. Rich broth, tender beef, and chewy noodles make this the kind of dish that feels simple at first, but carries so much tradition behind it.

Noodle shops are such an important part of everyday food culture in China, and trying them in Berlin is a nice way to see how Chinese comfort food finds its place in a European city.

Chinese Tea Time, episode 2, part 4: xiaolongbao at Shaniu’s House of Noodles in Berlin.

For this part of episode 2, we try xiaolongbao, one of the most iconic Chinese dumplings. They are known for the soup inside, which makes them so satisfying but also a little dangerous if you bite into them too quickly.

Xiaolongbao are a great example of how Chinese food can be delicate, technical, comforting, and fun at the same time. It is not just about the filling, but also about the wrapper, the broth, the texture, and the way you eat them.

A perfect dish to end this episode of Chinese Tea Time at Shaniu’s House of Noodles in Berlin.

Chinese Tea Time, episode 2, part 3: pig ears at Shaniu’s House of Noodles in Berlin.

This dish is probably one of the most interesting parts of the episode from a cultural perspective. Pig ears might sound unusual if you are looking at it from a German or European food perspective, but in many Chinese food traditions, texture is just as important as flavor.

Crunchy, chewy, cold, spicy, or seasoned in a very specific way, dishes like this show how Chinese cuisine often values parts of the animal that many people in Europe might not usually order.

Chinese food in Berlin is not only about noodles and dumplings. Sometimes it is also about trying something that challenges what you are used to.
