Hey everyone! Piotr Kwasnik here, super excited to be hosting @nzcine this week! Thanks so much for sharing all that aerial magic Simon @echovalleyaerial - those long lens shots were awesome!

First thing you’re probably wondering is where this guy with the unusual name is from… Poland! 🇵🇱

I’ve loved capturing frames since I was a little kid, and that passion somehow turned into a life surrounded by cameras, stories and a lot of tech and gear. I genuinely enjoy the tools as much as the craft, because anything that helps tell a story better, inspires me.

Over the years I shot a lot of music videos (I’ll share more about that later this week) and those projects really shaped me and taught me how to problem-solve, adapt and find frames on the go.

Recently I’ve been focusing more on product launch videos and commercials which has opened up a whole new creative space.

I also run a YouTube channel @masterofcamera where I talk about cameras, lenses and create camera setup guides for other filmmakers.

And because I’ve always cared about gear that works well and looks good, I ended up creating my own HDMI cables under the name allrad. It started as a small passion project after not finding anything I liked.

Most importantly, this industry has given me the chance to meet and work with so many incredible people.
That’s honestly my favourite part of what I do.
The friendships, the collaborations and the great energy keep me inspired every day.

Looking forward to sharing more throughout the week. 🎬✨ by @piotr.dp

Thanks everyone for joining me over the past week. It’s been a lot of fun! Next up is…. 2026! 🍾 Merry Christmas and happy New Year everyone, enjoy the break and some well-earned downtime.

As the last post, I wanted to share a few camera rigs I enjoy using. A Steadicam paired with a gimbal for those long, sweeping shots. 360 rigs, which are actually one of my favourites, especially when paired with a probe lenses. And also the double-stabilised bike rig, which was a fun one to build for a shoot down in the South Island.

Always experimenting, always learning.
See you out there team! 🎬✌🏻 by @piotr.dp

🎬Vertiscope - I recently filmed a music video using vertical anamorphic, also known as vertiscope.

It’s a technique where you mount an anamorphic lens horizontally, then rotate the camera 90 degrees. It’s simple, but it changes the way you think about framing completely.

I shot this on a full-frame 3:2 open-gate camera with 1.5x anamorphic lenses. Once desqueezed, the image ends up very close to a 1:1 aspect ratio. It looks great on its own, but it’s also incredibly practical.

In a world where clients often need both 16:9 and 9:16 deliverables, this is honestly one of the most flexible ways to shoot. One frame, multiple outputs.

One important thing when shooting this way is monitoring. You need a monitor that can do vertical desqueeze specifically, because the usual horizontal desqueeze won’t work once the camera is rotated.

Definitely a technique I’ll be using more. 🎬 by @piotr.dp

This one’s for the crew. From producers to runners, none of this happens without you. Some people are genuinely next level multitasking like crazy, riding a hoverboard while dispersing smoke for a music video… yes, that actually happened.

Huge shout out to the production teams, directors, cast, safety, helicopter pilots and all the incredibly talented people behind the scenes. It’s the people who bring the magic to the shoot, turning ideas into reality. 🎬❤️ taken in New Zealand by @piotr.dp

Music videos have always been one of my favourite things to shoot because they give you total creative freedom. Nothing is ever too crazy, and you’re encouraged to experiment and push ideas as far as they can go. That’s honestly why I love them so much.

I started filming with Alien Weaponry about 10 years ago, and it’s been an incredible journey growing side by side. Their music introduced me to so many Māori stories and traditions, and I’ve learnt so much from them over the years. It’s something I’m really grateful for.

With music videos, nothing surprises me anymore. One day it’s a pool of red paint, another day you’re underwater holding your breath trying to get the shot or on the streets of Japan in crazy heat filming music videos.

One of the most unique experiments we did was projection mapping. We filmed a clean performance take, ran it through After Effects with a glitch effect, then projected that version back onto the singers. The result looked almost three-dimensional super simple, but visually impressive.

🎥How to keep your camera clean….
Tip #1 - Don’t go to Holi Colour Festival! 🤣✌🏻

Had an amazing time filming Holi back in the day (2016 & 2017) but I would never do it again without a waterproof housing hahaha. It’s super important to keep away from any kind of dust, and if you’re wondering why my camera doesn’t look protected… it’s because I over-protected it at first and it kept overheating. 🔥 My only option was to rip the cover off, tape all the dials and buttons and rely purely on the touchscreen. 😅

And oh boy… you’d be surprised how many people LOVE throwing colour powder straight at the camera!

Fun fact, the camera still works perfectly fine to this day and produces some colourful results! 🎬 by @piotr.dp

Feeling incredibly honoured, 3 awards this year for Mau Moko! 🎬🎥🎸 Couldn’t have done it without the incredible team who put in the mahi and brought this project to life. Truly grateful for every single one of you.

Huge thanks to Alien Weaponry. It’s been 10 years of shooting music videos together, growing side by side. Their music carries such powerful stories, and it inspires us to create visuals that match that heavy metal energy. 🤘🏼🎸
