Ten cancellations in a studio with 50 members is 20% of the base gone in a month. Ten in a studio with 300 is about 3%, and the raw number looks identical in both.

Cancellation rate is your cancellations divided by your active members, which gives you the percentage of your base you lost in a given period. A studio can be adding new members every single month and still be shrinking when the cancellation rate is outpacing the growth, and the raw number will never show you.

This line from @rebuild_with_coach_rachel really stood out:

“If you want professional-level commitment, build a professional-level job.”

Rachael co-owned a boutique studio for 10+ years and grew it from $8K to $89K a month. She didn’t get there through ads. She got there by keeping great people: no split shifts, real benefits, and a path to grow into something bigger.

So many studio owners we work with are stuck in a constant cycle of rehiring. This post is a great reminder that the fix might not be who you hire, but what you’re offering them to stay.

At risk member percentage is the share of your active members with an engagement score of 60 or lower. It shows you how much of your base could cancel right now, rather than at the end of the month when the cancellations come through.

Owners usually find out a member was disengaged when the cancel request arrives, and by then the convo you needed to have was weeks ago. Hopefully yours is under 15% of your total member base.

The top performing studios are clear on the basics:
- where their next leads are coming from
- what their conversion rates are
- which offers they're running right now
- what the next six months look like
- how their follow up works

None of it needs a big overhaul. It needs somebody to know the answers.
