PWA is excited to share that the historic restoration of the KCMO City Hall South Plaza and Garage is now in its finishing touches. The aerial photos highlight the transformation from pre-construction conditions to the project’s current stage as it nears completion.

These key improvements included in the project strengthen the long-term performance, accessibility, and civic presence of this important public space:

• Restoration of the corroded underground garage concrete structure reinforces the structural integrity of the facility supporting the plaza above.
• The plaza walkways, stone terraces, and stairs have been carefully restored to preserve their historic materials and craftsmanship while improving durability for daily public use.
• The new south entrance vestibule accommodates contemporary security operations while respecting and complementing the building’s historic architectural character.
• A newly sloped walkway provides ADA-compliant access to the south entry, creating a more welcoming and accessible approach for all visitors.
• The restoration of the existing fountains revives one of the plaza’s defining visual and cultural features.

Together, these improvements revitalize the South Plaza by restoring the character, beauty, and functionality that define this prominent historic City Hall, ensuring it continues to serve the public and civic life of Kansas City for years to come. by @piperwindarchitects

𝗔 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀—𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. 🤍🏡🪟 Vertical scale sets the tone the moment you step inside this Meadowbrook great room. A soaring, wood-paneled ceiling draws the eye upward to sculptural chandeliers suspended in perfect proportion, while uninterrupted sightlines carry seamlessly through the kitchen, dining, and living areas in one cohesive architectural composition.

This custom RM Standard living space was designed around balance—bold in scale, thoughtful in execution. Tailored black accents define the openness, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace creates a striking focal point, and subtle pops of color add even more visual interest and dimension.

Natural light pours in from every angle, further amplifying the space’s airiness and reinforcing what it was meant to be: elevated, intentional, and built to feel just as impressive on a quiet morning as when filled with guests.

PWA is excited to share the progress on the historic restoration of the KCMO City Hall South Plaza and Garage. Aerial photos are shown sequentially from before to the current stage of construction.
This prominent restoration project includes the following main components: partial removal, replacement and repairs to the corroded underground garage’s concrete structure; complete removal, waterproofing, and restoration of the plaza walkways, stone terraces and stairs; a new small front entrance vestibule to accommodate security operations; a new wheelchair accessible walkway leading to the new entrance; and, the restoration of the existing eight fountains.

The design & execution of these components was carefully conceived to integrate seamlessly with the significantly adorned historic City Hall, it’s walled terraces and grand plazas.

When you get to see first-hand amazing craftsmanship taking place, it is always such a joy! That is exactly what we got to see when our office visited KC Forged. This company manufactures custom metal railings, fences and a variety of other ornamental iron fixtures. They walked us through their process and showed us some very cool pieces that they were currently building, including a very intricate curved stair railing for a local residence.

A lot of work…and framing, goes into making the large open spaces & classic details that people love in their homes. The framing stage of construction is where the design really starts to come to life. Oftentimes the parts of a building that you can’t see when it is all finished are the coolest! We love it when these pieces of the puzzle come together and begin to tell the story. Shout out to @gahaganeddy for their amazing work!

The beauty of elegant buildings can be found in the details! This holds true all the way down to the framing elements that become hidden once the building is complete. These details are what bring the design to life and provide that beautifully simple look we try to achieve. Even when it is not that simple! Shout out to Gene Fritzel Construction for their amazing work!
